History: Our Academic Mentor Program was a short-term strategic approach to improve student engagement during the pandemic. The program was successful in helping both teachers and students feel more supported within the constraints of online learning. Since then, the Academic Mentor Program has continued to be prioritized due to the positive impact on the culture inside classrooms and across the school, as well as the improved sense of sustainability for teachers, and increased academic support for all students–especially those with the greatest learning needs. The program has grown into ARISE’s Education Pathway, a college and career pipeline program to support ARISE students and alumni to enter the field of education.

Job Description & Responsibilities: The organizing principle is that Academic Mentors devote most of their time and expertise providing direct student support in the classroom. As a supporting educator in the classroom, it is important for Academic Mentors to model ARISE Core Values and expectations.

Start and End Date

• August 2024 - June 2025

Work Hours

• Monday - Friday (Flexibility is provided around college/personal schedule)
• 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Academic Mentors will be responsible for…

• Advisory (Co-Advisor)
• 8:30 am - 9:00 am Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays
• 8:30 am-10:25 am Wednesdays

In Class Support (1 or more teachers, 1 or more subjects)

• Supporting Teachers:
• Take attendance on time every day and collect student phones.
• Support teachers in preparing for class, including making copies, gathering materials, classroom setup, etc.
• Provide redirection to minor student off-task behaviors.
• Grade students work when possible and input into PowerSchool.
• Uphold classroom systems and support classroom organization.
• Supporting Students
• Continually monitor and proactively notice when student support is needed and act to provide that support.
• Consistently check for understanding to make sure students know what they are supposed to be doing in class and feel capable of completing their work
• Affirm students’ thinking and encourage them to share their ideas.
• Demonstrate genuine care for students and their success inside and beyond the classroom.
• Hold clear professional boundaries with students while working to act as a bridge between teachers and students.
• Always willing to provide additional support when needed (i.e., connecting students with resources, grade and progress monitoring, calling families, etc.).

Enrichment

• Supporting Outside Community Partners & Students
• Act as a liaison between community partners and ARISE staff.
• Support facilitator with attendance, collecting student phones, and redirecting students.
• Escort students to and from locations of Enrichment classes.
• Encourage student participation in Enrichment activities and model strong engagement.
• Participation and Attendance in PD, Coaching, and Meetings
• Attend 1:1 meetings with teachers and participate in coaching observations and debrief meetings on a regular basis.
• Attend all Whole Staff PD and Academic Mentor PD days.
• Attend grade-level Academic Familia meetings on a weekly basis.

Required Qualifications

• 60 credits, Associate's or Bachelor’s degree
• Excellent time management
• Experience with student support
• Highly organized and detail oriented
• Growth mindset, commitment to building a healthy staff culture of professional learners

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00 - $32.00 per hour
