Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Children's Speech & Language Therapy Serviceas a Carer Peer Support Worker.

The Carer Peer Support Worker is an exciting opportunity to join the Children's Speech and Language team in a newly developed role to support families and children and young people who are waiting for a S< assessment.

The applicant should have their own experience of caring for a child or young person who has Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).

The role consists of working with families to support 2-4 year olds with SLCN to provide information, strategies and parent led programs in collaboration with the clinical staff, other practitioners and support workers.

Main duties of the job

  • Support families and carers directly including one-one and in small family groups
  • Initiate, establish and maintain relationships with families and carers in their homes and other community settings.
  • Provide families with information, strategies, and parent-led programs
  • Encourage active waiting and improve children's speech and language skills
  • Share and discuss common experiences with families and carers in an appropriate manner
  • Work under the direction and leadership of registered professionals.
  • Support people with their emotional, personal and physical needs

knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Lived experience of caring for children and young people with Speech, Language and Communication Needs
  • Experience working as part of a team
  • Experience of working independently and managing own workload
  • Knowledge of Peer Support and role of supporting families and children and young people
  • Knowledge of voluntary sector services that can support carers and families in Northamptonshire
  • An understanding of the practices of Human Rights in the delivery of this role

Desirable

  • Completed or doing Peer Support Worker training
  • Experience of working with children and young people in a paid or voluntary capacity
  • Experience of running groups, activities or training
  • Experience of being supervised

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Excellent verbal communication skills that can be used within a wide range of settings and a wide range of people.
  • Good written communication skills to maintain records.
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Ability to prioritise workload with support
  • Ability to use basic computer skills to collect, collate and report daily on clients
  • Ability to travel across sites in good time
  • Punctual and flexible across hours of work when required
  • Able to use own story to benefit others where appropriate
  • Confidence to liaise with other teams and services including external agencies to promote activities within communities.
  • Skills to assist in planning and delivering activities to families / carers / C&YP.
