Job Summary

A Landscape and Grounds Superintendent provides leadership in and performs administrative work in the Landscape and Grounds trade profession following and teaching recognized procedures and techniques of the trade. With an emphasis on performance measurement, customer satisfaction, and safety, supervises approximately twenty full time and student employees; trains in the procedures and techniques of the Landscape and Grounds trade; leads in the recruiting, retention and evaluation of employees. A Landscape and Grounds Superintendent works independently on administrative tasks, serves as the main point of contact for the university community and for Landscaping and Grounds team members for accomplishing outdoor work, ordering material and supplies, assigning skilled trades workers to projects, providing technical support for the trade shops, training employees in the procedures and techniques of the Landscape and Grounds trade.

Responsibilities

Supervise approximately twenty full time and student employees; trains in the procedures and techniques of the Landscape and Grounds trade; leads in the recruiting, retention and evaluation of employees. Organizes, and leads employees in the maintenance of University grounds. Trains employees in proper methods of job requirements.
Plan and coordinate work assignments and schedules to ensure grounds keeping assignments are completed correctly and in a timely manner. Direct trash removal operation for the campus.
Monitor beds for problems and designate tasks as needed. Propagate and grow plant material. Design beds for two yearly plantings. Coordinate planting efforts for annual and perennial beds. Coordinate plant set ups for campus events.

Use computerized work management system to retrieve and update status of requests for services in area of responsibility. Ensure that work orders have time recorded and closed appropriately. Communicate via email or other written documents, and create word documents, excel spreadsheets, and drawings as required.
Maintain greenhouse and nursery material. Apply pesticides. Purchase and/or make recommendations for purchases of necessary equipment and supplies. Prepare seed and materials orders.
Maintain tree inventory, perform risk assessments and lead work performed by tree professionals

Create landscaping designs and drawings. Community engagement through events and tasks such as Sustainability Initiatives, Earth Week, Arbor Day, Community Garden, Native Plantings, Parking Lot and Building Shade. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications
Associates degree in horticulture, forestry, landscape architecture, environmental science or equivalent and 15 years grounds keeping experience including 7 years supervisory or lead worker experience. Experience in all aspects of plant propagation and production. Cultural needs of established plantings and application of pesticides and fertilizers. Knowledge of plant material and their needs. Knowledge of greenhouse operations. Knowledge of pests and able to identify disease. Must have supervisory skills. Computer skills required, advance knowledge preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Educational Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in horticulture, forestry, landscape architecture, environmental science or equivalent, and 10 years of landscaping experience including 5 years of supervisory experience.

Proposed Salary

$60,000 Annually
