Description
A Deaf or Hard of Hearing Teacher provides itinerant-based direct service to students with deaf or hard of hearing needs based on their individual IEP goals, consultation to district staff, and family support. The successful candidate will have the ability to plan and prepare high-level, creative learning environments that are engaging, relevant, address student needs, and are based on best practices in instruction and students with special education needs.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
The use of amplification equipment (hearing aids, FM/sound field systems, cochlear implants, etc.);
Auditory training and speech reading practices;
Instruction in oral and written vocabulary and connected language;
Interagency relationships and effective methods of program coordination;
Learning theory based upon the principles of behavior analysis and behavior modification, with an emphasis on positive reinforcement;
Practical application of principles, practices, methods and strategies applicable to DHH students;
Providing support across educational environments and systems of service to DHH students;
Assessment of students for initial placement and ongoing assessment of students on the caseload.
Prepare sequential and meaningful instruction geared to the student's assessed needs, as determined by the IEP team with goals and objectives that include functioning, and motivational levels. This instruction should be reflected in lesson plans, as appropriate.
Awareness of services and supports available from local programs for students.
Knowledge of local, state, and national resources for the education of deaf or hard of hearing students.
Provide professional development for staff, parents, and other stakeholders as necessary.
Understanding of current professional materials and resources such as online resources, libraries, universities, etc.
Understanding of information and training regarding current research, development, technology, and best practice strategies.
Essential Functions:
Conduct assessments and evaluations to determine the educational impact of hearing loss in the classroom, including re-evaluations. Provide written reports that document assessment outcomes and identify needs. Set goals and objectives, and recommend the amount and level of service needed for students to achieve Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
Includes but is not limited to:
Evaluating to determine eligibility for deaf or hard of hearing services, according to the DPI Wisconsin Eligibility Criteria;
Provide academic related instruction and services required to meet the individualized educational needs of students in all schools and other appropriate environments.
Ensure consistent communication, collaboration, and consultation with stakeholders including but not limited to:
Assisting student, parents, and special and regular education personnel in the supporting the unique educational needs and learning characteristics of students who are deaf or hard of hearing, available resources and understanding the students’ unique hearing conditions and implications for education;
Consulting regularly with the classroom teacher, other regular and special education personnel, parents, and others to coordinate programs and services for students;
Attend planning and IEP meetings for students;
Maintain regular communication with educational assistants or educational interpreters when appropriate, to ensure proper reinforcement of skills and material adaptation/modification, as in accordance with the IEP; and
Provide in-service training for school personnel regarding the individual needs of students who have deaf or hard of hearing needs, and the need for adaptations, and services.
In collaboration with school staff, ensure that accessible materials, adaptation, modifications, and equipment needed by the students, and the classroom teacher, are provided in a timely manner to ensure the student's maximum participation in all classroom activities.
Conduct functional hearing assessments to determine how the students with DHH needs functionally use their hearing to perform classroom tasks.
Consult with teachers, parents and school staff, regarding the students needs and the accommodations that are necessary for the student to participate in his or her educational setting.
Provide training and resources to school staff and parents regarding adaptive equipment, and teaching techniques specific for students with DHH needs.
Provide information to teachers, parents, and school staff about the impact of a hearing loss on classroom learning.
Interpret information obtained in hearing reports and consults with an audiologist to clarify medical information.
Participate in Individual Education Planning meetings for students with DHH needs and assists the educational team in program placement decisions. Maintain ongoing contact with parents to dialogue about a child's abilities, progress, and future goals.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to spend up to 70% of the day walking.
  • Able to walk or run quickly through hallways and stairwells in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods, respond to active crisis situations and support student movement.
  • Ability to perform light physical work, frequently lifting up to 50 pounds without assistance
  • Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide information and assistance
  • Ability to move throughout the building and from building to building
  • Dexterity and hand/eye coordination necessary to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment
  • Hearing ability adequate to participate in numerous conversations throughout the day, both in person and over the telephone
  • Ability to complete job activities in an environment where background noise and frequent interruptions are the norm
  • Ability to maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and accuracy
