NAES is Hiring an Auxiliary Operator Near Sayreville, NJ

Middlesex Generating is a landfill gas-fired cogeneration plant situated in Sayreville, NJ, boasting a 17-megawatt (MW) combined cycle facility. Central to its operation are two Solar Tarus T60 Solar Gas Turbines, ensuring efficiency. To maximize performance, we've seamlessly integrated an Elliot Steam Turbine and a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) into the system. This integration allows us to harness waste heat, thus optimizing our power generation process.
Opportunity Summary
The Auxiliary Operator is entrusted with continuously developing their qualifications to monitor and document the operation of the landfill gas-fired combined cycle power plant, with a primary focus on ensuring safe and efficient equipment performance. As they progress in their role, the Auxiliary Operator has the opportunity to become a fully qualified Operator. Equipped with a growing understanding of power plant systems and procedures, they execute essential operations while strictly adhering to environmental parameters. Additionally, they actively participate in controlling and monitoring plant status during rounds, utilizing both manual and computerized systems to meet generating requirements safely and efficiently. As they advance, they take on increased responsibilities in overseeing plant operations, demonstrating proficiency in managing and optimizing equipment performance to contribute to the overall success of the facility.
Here's a look at some of the things you'll be doing:
  • Monitor and record the operation of the landfill gas fired combined cycle power plant.
  • Maintain the safe, efficient, and dependable operation of the plant equipment.
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of all power plant systems, operating and emergency response procedures and the ability to execute procedures and equipment when necessary.
  • Understand plant environmental parameters and operate within those parameters.
  • Control, monitor, record plant status while performing plant rounds manually and with the computerized monitoring system.
  • Use the CMMS System to ensure work orders for maintenance on all systems and equipment are identified in submitted work order form; support corrective maintenance efforts on selected equipment when properly trained or supervised.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of all plant systems and operating procedures. Has the ability to execute procedures. Has the ability to access, read and comprehend the appropriate plant manuals, and drawings.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of plant environmental parameters and operate within those parameters.
  • Perform plant start-up, shutdown, and operation of steam turbine/generator systems along with all associated auxiliary equipment, adhering strictly to operating instructions and procedures.
  • Make routine rounds and inspections of the plant, (inside and outside) to ensure proper operation of the plants main and auxiliary equipment and systems.
  • Update, maintain and review required plant logs and records on a continuous basis, precisely and accurately. Utilize company electronic mail system and other software programs effectively.
  • Test, monitor and document water chemistry per written guidelines to maintain proper steam quality and boiler chemistry.
  • Understand and operate electrical switchgear and circuit breakers.
  • Once qualified, assist in the training of new operators as required.
  • Successfully complete company sponsored training courses and training & qualification programs as required.
  • Ensure plant and equipment is maintained in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Ensure accuracy of submitted defective equipment reports.
  • Ensure proper "Lock-out/Tag-out" procedures and other safety procedures are followed in compliance with the safety manual.
  • Support maintenance and operations activities as required, including assisting in the testing and maintenance of systems and equipment. Complete preventive maintenance work orders.
  • Effectively communicate information to supervision and fellow operation and maintenance personnel, relative to the conditions of the plant equipment performance and, provide suggestions for plant improvement
  • Develop and maintain harmonious working relationship with personnel and employees of other companies with whom direct contact is required.
  • Perform tasks under supervision of Control Room Operator, Lead O&M Technician, and Control Room Operators.

Working Relationship
The Auxiliary Operator reports to the Operations & Maintenance Manager for work direction and assignments related to the job.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, steel toe boots, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
Fitness for Duty
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
Work Schedule
Position requires extended working hours and varied night shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.
Compensation
Initial starting compensation will range from $26 to $31 per hour.
Job Qualifications
  • The ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment is essential, typically acquired through four years of high school education.
  • A New Jersey Black or Blue Seal boiler operator's license is desired but not required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience in power plant operations, including monitoring and recording plant operation, maintaining equipment, executing procedures, and understanding emergency response protocols. Candidates with less than 1 or 2 years of power plant experience will be considered.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed system steam generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management, and inspection/recording of plant parameters is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of power plant equipment such as motors, pumps, boilers, turbines, generators, fluid systems, chemical handling, water treatment systems, cooling towers, pollution control equipment, AC and DC electrical distribution and control systems. Coupled with expertise in utilizing the Microsoft Office 365 Suite for documentation, data analysis, reporting, and communication tasks within the power plant environment.
  • Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls is also desirable.
  • Proficiency in using basic hand and shop tools is desired.
  • A solid work ethic coupled with a desire to learn is expected.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License at all times.
