About us

The Al-Van Humane Society (AVHS) was founded in 1968 as a non-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to providing emergency food and shelter for homeless pets. In 2012, Al-Van adopted no-kill best practices. ​ AVHS rehomes companion animals that can no longer remain with their families; provides food and shelter for over 600 animals annually from Allegan and Van Buren counties; and offers community education on responsible and compassionate pet ownership. AVHS is dedicated to reducing the number of stray and unwanted animals by spaying and neutering all animals prior to adoption, and offering an annual low cost community spay and neuter clinic with the help of grant funding.

Marketing and Development Coordinator

Al-Van Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in South Haven, Michigan. We seek a dynamic and persuasive individual who is ready to help lead the humane society in carrying out its mission "to compassionately serve the companion animals in our community by providing the best shelter, adoptive homes, education and resources available." The Marketing and Development Coordinator will be responsible for marketing and fundraising events and programs. This position reports to the Operations Manager.

  • Marketing of all events including Fur Ball, 5K Race, Golf Outing, Bark-B-Que, Meet and Greet Events, and any other event conducted.
  • Marketing includes Facebook, website, flyers, and posters as needed. Events with silent auction will require photographing auction items and writing descriptions of those items, and running the silent auction via donor program.
  • Work collaboratively with board members on major events.
  • Prepare Profit and Loss reports for small events.
  • Development of new programs, events and membership activities should be considered.
  • Heavily utilize various Social Media Platforms (facebook, instagram, tiktok ect) on a daily basis
  • Relationship building with members, donors and volunteers.
  • Participate in board meetings (6/year).
  • Development of donors and donor tracking.
  • Responsible for the development of all public relations, marketing and educational material for the shelter. This includes social media, website, and weekly media emails.
  • Responsible to network and build strategic alliances with other nonprofits, community and national organizations to advance the shelter's mission.
  • Publishes weekly, quarterly and annual newsletters.
  • Establishes regular media contacts for all shelter public relations and press releases.
  • Advocates for animal welfare in the community.
  • Contributes to producing monthly board report and annual report (with Operations Manager).
  • Procure and display logo merchandise.
  • Help in the front office by answering phones, helping customers and processing adoptions (as needed).
  • Update pictures and profiles for adoptable animals on ShelterLuv

Minimum education of a high school education; college degree preferred.

Experience in not for profit fundraising and donor development preferred.

Superior customer service skills required, especially in stressful situations.

The ability to multi-task and stay organized.

Great communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other staff and board members.

Experience with MS Office applications, Adobe. Ability to use Active Campaign, Canva, ShelterLuv, GiveButter and other programs.

Skills using social media as a marketing tool.

Ability to write newsletters and press releases.

Some weekend and evening availability.
