North Carolina Dept of Transportation is Hiring a Marine Pipefitter Near Dare County, NC

Description of Work

This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities.

This position performs journey level work in the installation and maintenance of firefighting, bilge, hydraulic steering, sanitary, potable water, hot water heating, fuel, and exhaust piping systems on dredges and ferries. Work involves routine maintenance and installation of complete systems from blueprints. Work must meet U.S. Coast Guard standards for safety and quality. Position performs with considerable independence in routine work. Complex or unusual assignments are received from the marine hull supervisor. Work includes inspection of existing piping systems through both visual and hydrostatic testing. Work often requires overhaul or replacement of pumps and valves, installation and maintenance of plumbing systems, performs hydrostatic testing and inspects piping systems; selecting proper methods of installation and repair of piping systems; use of tools and equipment necessary for repairs and maintenance; reading of blueprints and mechanical drawings, and all other duties as required.
  • This position works out of the Ferry Division Marine Maintenance Shipyard in Manns Harbor, NC and work hours are 7:00am to 3:30pm Monday – Friday.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon results of pre-employment drug and fit-for-duty testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Knowledge of the methods of installation and repair of piping systems.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions in the pipefitting trade.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment necessary to affect repairs.
  • Knowledge of the characteristics of pipes constructed of a variety of materials.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience in the installation and repair of a variety of piping systems similar to those aboard ferries and dredges; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
