Job Summary:
The Intermodal Operations Manager is the Chicago operations head overseeing and ensuring total efficiency with all tasks associated with our Intermodal services from order creation to completion. This person provides leadership and direction to the people at the core of our Chicago Intermodal Operations who coordinate daily freight load movements on a national scale. He/she will also act as a liaison between internal and external partners to understand needs and requirements to satisfy operational KPIs, RFP execution, contract compliance, EDI, etc. while building long-lasting, mutually beneficial relationships. The below is intended to describe the general content of and requirements for the performance of this job and is not to be construed as an exhaustive statement of essential functions, responsibilities or requirements.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the success and development of the Chicago Intermodal Operations location.
  • Oversee cost and revenue management of load movement ensuring it is timely, efficient and profitable while providing excellent customer service and consistent communication throughout the entire process.
  • Provide training and development opportunities to staff members
  • Establish routine meetings with sales representatives to ensure operational goals are met at the customer level
  • Conduct metric review and analysis with Corporate Finance Team.
  • Facilitating, creating, and updating of written SOPs for all aspects of dispatch and customer service
  • Improve operational efficiencies through training, program development, and system enhancements
  • Establish and maintain relationships with rail contacts, drayage partners and customers
  • Assist in negotiation of new rates, customer and rail/dray partners
  • Stay up to date with overall market trends, changes, and competitor activity
  • Understand customer KPIs and EDI reporting requirements to ensure compliance
  • Proactively alerting customers of negative supply chain impacts, in conjunction with Sales Team
  • Evaluate account performance and analyze shipment data with Sales Team
  • Work alongside Intermodal Strategy Manager to ensure strategic growth that will support existing business, as well as create new opportunities
  • Work with Sales to identify opportunities which will increase revenue
  • Work with Process Improvement Manager on new software development / implementation in Quantum EDGE
  • Create an environment that does not hinder creativity, but promotes smart decision-making
  • Encourage department to find new and innovative ways to meet and exceed customers’ expectations, and reward those initiatives when taken
  • Coordinate office-wide employee recognition/incentive efforts
  • Assist other internal and field departments; as needed
  • Must be able to travel, as needed, to meet with Corporate, vendors, and customers

  • Regular and reliable attendance expected
  • Other work-related duties as assigned by supervisor/manager
Minimum Knowledge, Abilities and Skills Required:
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Management, Transportation, or related field
  • 6-8 years of related experience
  • 5 years of personnel and/or relationship management
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work well in high-pressure settings
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficient in our Transportation Management Software
  • Transportation or logistics industry experience preferred, but not required
  • Willingness to pursue and apply self-growth strategies
