Location: Eglin AFB, FL DescriptionC-Star Solutions is searching for a Systems Research Engineer to support research and development efforts at the Air Force Research Laboratory: Munitions Directorate. The team applies cutting edge science and technology, high performance computing resources, and advanced laboratory technology to the problem of developing and testing advanced sensor concepts and components for the United States Air Force, including related effects and interactions with weapon systems. The successful applicant will play a key role in supporting a fast-paced weapon-system program, including design and development of sub-system components, as well as test and evaluation of a novel weapon concept in an all-up-round format. Responsible for tracking multiple unsynchronized programs through the product life-cycle from invention/design to prototyping and testing, shadowing senior technical personnel and aggressively jumping in to support anywhere possible.
Responsible for coordinating across numerous sub-system subject matter experts to understand weapon system operational principles, modes of operations, technical risks and opportunities
Responsible for representing the government’s interests at sub-system and system-level test events, reviewing test plans and coordinating adjustments in test design based on results.
Responsible for leveraging existing modeling & simulation tools to probe design trade space and highlight high risk areas to project lead to inform future design & test activities
Responsible for reviewing technical materials submitted by subject matter experts and identifying critical performance measures and drafting technical communications/questions to support discussions.
Able to communicate with a wide variety of technical subject matter experts, as well as program office representatives and end-users to identify program risks
Supporting technical sub-system leads with first-principles design verification, modeling & simulation, and test design
Able to work effectively within a broad team structure with many diverse backgrounds and points of view
Able to independently study completely unfamiliar technical topics and quickly identify lists of questions/concerns to highlight to technical experts, supporting the project lead in driving technical consensus.
Interested in switching between diverse technical topics and enthusiastic to investigate from first-principles
Optionally contributing to internal DoD proposal-writing, presentations to both technical and senior-leader audiences, and programmatic topics such as evaluating cost/schedule/performance of project performers.
Qualifications
Degree in science, engineering, or physics
Minimum education and experience requirements:
Bachelor’s degree with 0-5 years of experience
Master’s degree may substitute for 2 years of experience
PhD may substitute for 5 years of experience
Generalist background or attitude with evidence of ability to grasp diverse technical topics
Desire interest or experience in any of the following areas:
Semi-active laser seekers
Passive EO/IR imaging
RF proximity sensors
Active/semi-active RF seekers
Rocket propulsion
Energetic materials/warheads
Guidance, navigation, and control
Desire experience with DoD proposal writing, to include large proposals and joint-service proposals
Desire experience with briefing technical audiences and/or senior leader audiences
Desire familiarity with DoD weapon system organizations to include Army/Navy/Air Force labs, program offices, requirements, and end-user organizations
Relentless prioritization of results – excitement to aggressively and creatively challenge secondary requirements such as process, policy, and authority to achieve the primary mission quickly and excellently.
Ability to switch between big picture thinking and obsessive detail tracking is a benefit
Strong organizational skills are required, due to huge volume of information/documentation
Applicant must be qualified to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance. Ability to obtain DoD Top Secret/SCI is preferred. Any existing clearance is desirable.
