Summary of Principal Responsibilities

The Graphic Designer supports a wide range of communications and donor marketing efforts with graphic design, photo editing, and project coordination. They work closely with the Senior Graphic Designer to help promote an appealing, consistent, and effective look and feel for all the organization’s fundraising, outreach, and publicity materials—from newsletter and media reports to business cards and promotional items.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities: The key responsibilities of the Graphic Designer include the following:

  1. Design, produce, and edit a range of digital, print, social media, and video materials in collaboration with Communications colleagues and teams. Manage assigned projects from concept to creation and publishing.
  2. Contribute to an appealing, consistent, and effective brand identity by applying brand guidelines across fundraising, outreach, and publicity materials. Advise staff and outside consultants/designers on best practices and brand guidelines.
  3. Collaborate with Senior Graphic Designer in producing publications such as Quaker Action and the annual report.
  4. Collaborate with Digital Media Manager to conceptualize and produce motion graphics for video, such as statistics, and visualization of concepts for which no footage exists. Deliver graphics that can be used and animated in After Effects.
  5. Serve as a point of contact for staff with questions about logos, business cards, letterhead, PowerPoint presentations, and other design requests.
  6. Proofread a variety of materials, such as emails, print publications, and web content.
  7. Create, improve, employ, and promote design templates for AFSC projects. Find and implement new techniques for improving quality and efficiency of design work. Train staff on use of templates and design platforms.
  8. Assist in collecting, organizing, and editing photos for use and inclusion in AFSC’s photo database.
  9. Provide design, sourcing, and production support for AFSC print materials and merchandise. Identify and recommend vendors based on cost, quality, and AFSC’s organizational values and priorities for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  10. Other projects as assigned by the Managing Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: BA/BS with an emphasis in Graphic Design (or related field) or equivalent work experience.

Experience

  1. At least 3 years’ professional graphic design experience, including both digital and print production.
  2. Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software used for graphic design, especially InDesign, Illustrator, Canva, Photoshop. Familiarity with motion principles. Fluency with Microsoft Office tools.
  3. Familiarity with best practices in web and multimedia design (such as information architecture, interface design, and usability best practices).
  4. Demonstrated ability to put design expertise and best practices to work for social change and fundraising, in a manner consistent with Quaker testimonies.
  5. Experience in project management, bringing design projects from conceptual and planning stages through overseeing designing and editing process and delivery of final product.

Other Required Skills and Abilities:

  1. A solid grasp of typography, grids, basic photo editing, and other design fundamentals, along with an awareness of current trends and techniques.
  2. Knowledge of industry standard prepress and print production techniques.
  3. A demonstrated ability to design effectively within existing “house styles,” design language and other established conventions, and develop further styles that remain compatible.
  4. Ability to work in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team; handle multiple simultaneous projects; collaborate remotely with colleagues; and meet deadlines.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively about visual designs with specialists and non-specialists. Ability to give and receive helpful, professional feedback, and iterate designs accordingly.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently and to take initiative, knowing when consultation with others is appropriate.
  7. Must be able to work evenings and weekends and travel as needed. Travel will likely be infrequent, such as three times per year.
  8. Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee, including nonviolence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
  9. Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations, of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender identity and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.

Compensation: Salary Range 14 ($55,000 - $72,747) Exempt – Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.
