The Environmental Compliance Specialist is responsible for the development of environmental programs and management systems, guidance, and procedures necessary to assure compliance with company policies, environmental regulations, and other legal conditions.

Essential Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

• Monitor and assist in regulatory and company environmental related reporting to regulatory agencies.
• Maintain, update and coordinates compliance management system.

• Liaison with management, technical staff, operations, and outside consultants to ensure work instructions and procedures are well-defined, documented, controlled, and updated to assure ongoing compliance with applicable environmental permits, rules, and regulations.

• Provide compliance management reports for corporate management’s review.
• Provide interpretation and guidance to management and operating divisions regarding impact and implementation of emerging regulatory changes.
• Aid in creating standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the environmental management system for landfill and recycling facilities.
• Work cooperatively with operational and technical staff to ensure timely preparation of regulatory reports and permit applications for management review prior to submittal to regulatory agencies.

• Regulatory interpretation, analysis, and tracking.
• Conduct and oversee inspections/audits of general facility compliance and compliance management systems.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, and minimum two (2) years of relevant work experience in waste management or other environmental field or a bachelor’s degree with a master’s degree in environmental sciences.
• Knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations (solid waste, air, water, and others) applicable to the solid waste industry.
• MS Office familiarity, general computer acumen and ability to learn to utilize other job-related technical software.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, familiarity with statistical methods and research skills.
