Description

Salary range is $26.44 / hour to $62.50 / hour, with a midpoint of $40.87 / hour. New hires typically receive between minimum and midpoint, however, we may go slightly higher based on experience, internal equity and market.

Public Safety and Security Field Activity Specialists are a 24-hour a day, 7-day a week field presence continuously supporting the work on developing partnerships to support increased collaboration between Sound Transit & the community.

GENERAL PURPOSE :

Under administrative direction of the Public Safety & Security Field Activity Manager, the Public Safety & Security Field Activity Specialist executes all aspects of the Public Safety and Security Field Activity Controller program to include, but not limited to, community outreach, emergency incident response, day to day inspection of Sound Transit Public Safety and Security operations, ensuring compliance of contracted security and law enforcement resources.

Public Safety and Security Field Activity Specialists are a 24-hour a day, 7-day a week field presence continuously supporting the work on developing partnerships to support increased collaboration between Sound Transit and the community.

The goal is to leverage community strengths, appropriate Sound Transit resources, and identify alternative strategies to various public safety and security issues impacting Sound Transit and the communities we serve.

This is community engagement through service and outreach that does not require the enforcement authority of a sworn police officer.

Specialists do not carry weapons nor enforce criminal laws.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

The following duties are a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Assist passengers and the public in and around Sound Transit facilities and services, including helping them address public safety and security concerns, navigating the transit system, and providing information or access to social service resources for individuals in need.
  • Making presentations to schools and community groups about crime prevention, personal safety awareness, or other topics related to the Public Safety and Security Division's mission.
  • Conducting daily inspections of contracted security and law enforcement services for alignment of contract performance to agency expectations and values.
  • Ensuring safety during planned or unplanned service interruptions, or other large public events by maintaining order and monitoring response and recovery efforts.
  • Promoting community involvement in Sound Transit's public safety and security activities through outreach programs such as transit watch programs.
  • Coordinating public safety efforts for large events such as concerts or sporting events.
  • Performing clerical duties such as filing reports, updating databases, and typing correspondence.
  • Champions and models Sound Transit's core values and demonstrates values-based behaviors in everyday interactions across the agency.
  • Contributes to a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion in alignment with Sound Transit's Equity & Inclusion Policy.
  • It is the responsibility of all employees to follow the Agency safety rules, regulations, and procedures pertaining to their assigned duties and responsibilities, which could include systems, operations, and / or other employees.
  • It is the responsibility of all employees to integrate sustainability into everyday business practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education and Experience : Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, and 4 years of work experience in the public sector providing service to the public or customers, preferably in a public facing security or law enforcement field;

Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications :

Valid state driver's license. This position is responsible for operating public safety non-revenue vehicles that are loaded with security, safety, and first aid gear and equipment.

Required Knowledge and Skills :

  • Ability to speak in public, in front of small to medium sized crowds.
  • Knowledge of basic safety, security, and criminal justice concepts.
  • The ability to prepare and assist with evacuation and / or emergency situations.
  • Problem solving and creativity.
  • Maturity and a responsible attitude.
  • Independent and able to work in an unsupervised environment.
  • Remain calm and focused in situations where personal safety or safety of others may appear to be at risk.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills :

  • Direct knowledge of community engagement / liaison tactics and practices such as community policing, school resource officer, or similar civilian function.
  • Experience assisting employees or passengers during emergency situations.
  • Experience and ability to secure and preserve an area for emergency response personnel.

Physical Demands / Work Environment :

  • Work is performed in the field environment and onboard transit vehicles.
  • Works outdoors in all weather conditions when patrolling by foot; may occasionally be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, physical harm, hazardous chemicals, and / or extreme noise.
  • Requires frequent exposure to Other Potentially Infectious Materials (OPIM).
  • Considerable amount of automobile travel required.
  • Occasionally required to lift or carry heavy objects such as security / first aid equipment and barricades.
  • Occasionally required to crawl / climb to dangerous and / or inaccessible areas.
  • Position is a 24-hour a day, 7-day a week field presence.
