Position Overview

Are you looking for a scientific leadership role that allows you to leverage the latest technology in bioinformatics, computational biology, and biological data science to help deliver treatments to 38 million people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)? If so, our Senior Scientist (Bioinformatics) role could be an exciting opportunity to explore.

As a Senior Scientist (Bioinformatics), you will develop and implement computational tools to analyze biological data. You will also be responsible for performing biological discovery and conducting research within the globally impactful HIV therapeutic area. You will join a high-performing and deliverable-driven team in a transparent and friendly work environment.

This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career. YOUR responsibilities include some of the following:

• Have opportunities to use biological data science skills to impact all phases of drug development, from discovery and development to post marketing safety and drug resistance monitoring
• Analyze viral genetic sequences, next generation sequencing (NGS) and biomarker data in support of preclinical and clinical programs that benefiting millions of people living with HIV globally
• Adopt, evaluate and develop world-class viral bioinformatics technologies and analytical pipelines
• Exercise your excellent communication and project management skills by working closely with a diverse group of partners including external collaborators, vendors, and internal groups in our global matrix organization
• Collaborate with other team members to develop and maintain internal bioinformatics platform that follows best practices in R&D
• Maintain knowledge of competitive market conditions, patient requirements, and technology advances
• Influence organizational thinking, design and execution of ViiV R&D projects and processes via your scientific insights
• Make significant contributions to advancing HIV therapeutics as a key player through either leading the projects or functioning as a core team member

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

• PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, systems biology, biomedical engineering, computer science, mathematics, or related quantitative fields.
• 5 years industry experience or equivalent and track record of data-driven solutions to complex biological problems
• Experience in Linux/Unix, high performance computing cluster and environment management tools (e.g. Conda/Mamba)
• Strong programming skills in Python (3 years) and shell scripting
• Experience in biological sequence analysis, including multiple sequence alignment and genome analysis
• Experience in NGS data analysis with deep understanding in variant calling
• Experience in bioinformatics data wrangling, analysis and visualization using Python, BioPython, Pandas or other packages
• Hands-on experience in statistical analysis and machine learning
• Experience of understanding, using and adapting in-house Python packages for data analysis
• Working knowledge of molecular biology

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

• Bioinformatics experience in HIV or microbial metagenomics
• Python package development experiences
• Independent problem-solving skills
• Strong communication and collaboration skills
• Strong team spirit and close interaction within a small team
• Hands-on expert values efficiency and productivity
• Detail oriented and deliverables driven
• Experience with stakeholder and project management
• Experience of working in regulatory environment
