Battelle Energy Alliance is Hiring a Ceramic Mechanical Engineer Near Idaho Falls, ID

Description

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Ceramic Mechanical Engineer to work in our Irradiated Fuels and Materials department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our EROB facility with every other Friday off. You will report to the manager over Irradiated Fuels and Materials.

The Irradiated Fuels and Materials department at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) seeks to fill a staff research position in mechanical engineering.

Responsibilities Include:
  • The Nuclear Materials Design staff will join the ongoing and future efforts in the Nuclear Materials Department with a focus on supporting the Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Reactor.
  • Development (ART) graphite program. The ART graphite program is a mature DOE funded program conducting one of the largest nuclear graphite unirradiated and irradiated testing programs in the world.
  • This is an experimental position within the DOE Advanced Reactor Development (ART) graphite program and will primarily consist of mechanical testing and development of test methods of synthetic graphite grades for new high temperature reactor (HTR) core components.
  • You will assist with mechanical and thermal testing of unirradiated and irradiated graphite, experience in analysis of ceramic material properties (probabilistic approach), lead development of new material testing methods for degraded and high temperature graphite, and lead academic, national, and international collaborations in nuclear graphite and carbon-composite testing research.
  • Additional experience in characterization and testing of C-C and SiC-SiC CMCs, fuel matrix material, and MMCs within a High Temperature Reactor (HTR) design would be advantageous. Specifically, the graphite program is interested in a candidate with experience in mechanical testing and analysis of ceramic/brittle materials.
QualificationsMinimum Requirements:

PR0200 - PhD

PR0300 - PhD and 2 years experience

* A PhD in material science or mechanical engineer with an emphasis in mechanical testing of ceramic materials.

* Proven expertise in mechanical testing and analysis of ceramic/brittle materials is required.

* Practical experience in testing ceramic or quasi-brittle materials is required. Includes ceramics, refractory materials, graphite, CMCs, and fuel matrix material.

* Knowledge of fabrication, characterization, fracture analysis, and mechanical testing experience with ceramic materials (specifically nuclear-based) is preferred.

* General experience in characterization techniques using TEM & FIB, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), digital image correlation (DIC), micro X-ray computer tomography (XCT), and other relevant characterization techniques are desirable.

* Experience in carbonaceous/graphite mechanical testing is desirable.

* Proven experience using and developing ASTM testing standards for ceramic and composite materials is desirable.

* Additional experience in modeling material behavior would be advantageous.

* Prior publications in high impact journals for materials science, characterization and nuclear applications.

* Strong asset to our interdisciplinary R&D team and work both independently and as a team member.
