Save The Children is Hiring an Advisor, Global Development Policy (P3) Near Washington, DC

Description

Summary

The Global Development Policy Advisor will lead in advancing Save the Children's overall policy and advocacy strategy across specified thematic areas in global development, with an initial emphasis on global gender policy. In this capacity, the advisor will work closely with the Managing Director, Global Development Policy to lead the development and implementation of policy and advocacy strategies targeting Congress and the U.S. Administration on global gender policy issues and other development related issues, including advocacy on the federal budget and appropriations. This position will also coordinate, as needed, with the Managing Director, Global Humanitarian Policy and the Gender Equality and Social Justice department and work closely with other Save the Children departments as well as Save the Children International as needed.

What You'll Be Doing

Lead the Development and Implementation of Global Development Policy with initial emphasis on Gender Policies (50%)

  • Develop and execute a policy and advocacy strategy to advance Save the Children's global gender policy and other development policy goals with the U.S. government in coordination with the Managing Director of Global Development Policy.
  • Conduct policy research and analysis on global development issues with an emphasis on gender.
  • Identify gaps and barriers to advancing Save the Children's global development policy goals, with initial emphasis on gender, and offer solutions.
  • Monitor, track and develop response strategies to legislative and Administration policy developments with initial emphasis on gender.
  • Research and develop educational materials for congressional targets and the Administration on priority global development issues, with an initial emphasis on gender.
  • Develop and execute a policy and advocacy agenda to advance other global development related policy areas, as needed.
  • Develop external advocacy products including fact sheets and policy briefs, and contribute to advocacy focused media/press materials, digital advocacy, social media, or products/language for use in grassroots engagement, as needed.

Manage External Relationships (25%)

  • Identify, develop, and maintain bipartisan and bicameral relationships in congressional offices with a focus on key committees of jurisdiction and members of leadership to advance Save the Children's policy priorities and provide intel and strategy advice to the full team.
  • Manage relationships with key representatives in relevant U.S. federal government agencies.
  • Manage relationships with external organizations and coalitions. Leverage these relationships to advance Save the Children's policy agenda.

Internal Coordination (20%)

  • Support gender mainstreaming of the government relations team's efforts as needed.
  • Work with relevant business teams, such as Gender Equality and Social Justice, on thematic issues to gather program information and impact data to strengthen advocacy.
  • Represent Save the Children U.S. on Save the Children International working groups such as the Girls' Advocacy working group and Gender Equality Technical Working Group.
  • Coordinate input from other colleagues within SCUS into reports, policy and advocacy strategies and workplans, and policy documents.

Other duties as needed (5%)

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, plus at least five (5) years of relevant experience
  • Professional experience specifically focused on developing and advancing an effective policy and advocacy agenda
  • Proven command of the workings of federal government operations and the US legislative process
  • Experience working in or with congressional offices to achieve legislative or policy goals
  • Professional proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Highly professional, proactive, motivated, energetic and well-organized
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and solve complex problems
  • Ability to work independently

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of international development issues, including global gender issues
  • Understanding of political dynamics of global development issues, including global gender issues
  • Professional experience specifically focused on advancing a policy and advocacy agenda related to international development issues
  • Experience working effectively in coalitions and networks

Compensation

Save the Children Action Network pays the following salary ranges for this position, dependent on candidate location:

  • Geo 1 - NY Metro, DC, and other locations with labor costs significantly above national average: Target Salary for this position is $108,800 - $121,600 base salary
  • Geo 2 - Locations around the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $98,600 - $110,200 base salary
  • Geo 3 - Locations significantly below the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $88,400 - $98,800 base salary

The salary ranges listed above are for US based candidates. For candidates located outside of the US, salary ranges will be based on the salary scales of the local employer of record.

Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, base salary of internal peers, business sector, and geographic location (more information on job structure is available here). Employee may be eligible for an incentive program.
