Description
Overview The new Harvey Fierstein Theatre Lab has the potential to transform the work of the Billy Rose Theatre Division and support theatre-making in the post-pandemic era. The Theatre Division seeks the first full-time program and outreach coordinator for Lab. The coordinator will have the opportunity to shape the future of this exciting new resource from the day the doors first open. They work with the curator of the Theatre Division to organize the monthly schedule for the lab and maintain and expand the technology in the space. The coordinator will be physically located in the Lab during the majority of their workday and will serve as the primary point of contact for all users. This is a 3-year temporary position.
We are looking for someone we can count on to:
Own :
  • Scheduling rehearsals and classes
  • Ensuring the lab is ready for each use
  • Connecting Lab users with the Library’s special collections staff
  • Working with Theatre unions and Guilds to ensure programs comply with all requirements
  • Promoting the Lab to schools and artists
Teach :
  • Users of the lab how to operate equipment available to them
Learn:
  • New theatre technologies with which they are not yet familiar
  • Use and handling of special collections
Improve :
  • Use of the theatre Lab
  • Interdepartmental coordination of theatre public programs
Some expectations for this role are that within:
1 month , this person will:
  • Have collaborated on the development an initial plan for external and internal booking of the Lab
  • Understand the current capabilities of the Lab
  • Be familiar with basic operation of the technology in the Lab 
3 months , this person will:
  • Have uses of the Lab outlined for Fall 2024
  • Have Collaborated with the Curator on a plan to promote the lab in communities that could benefit from it but may not otherwise hear of it 
  • Have identified additional resources that might benefit users of the lab
6 months and beyond , this person will:
  • Regularly run programs in the lab
  • Have implemented the first iteration of a successful outreach plan
  • Have a robust season of programming planned for Theatre in 2025 
Responsibilities
  • Scheduling rehearsals and classes
  • Ensuring the lab is ready for each use, including preparing the theatrical lighting, sound, and projection equipment and software as needed.
  • Connecting Lab users with the Library’s special collections
  • Ensure programs comply with all internal requirements as well as those of the Theatrical unions and guilds
  • Promoting the Lab to schools and artists
  • Manage relationships with guest artists and speakers appearing in both the Lab and the Bruno Walter Auditorium
  • Work with internal teams to produce programs selected by the Curator for the Lab and other Library spaces
Required Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & Certifications
  • An undergraduate degree from a four year college or university or equivalent experience.
Required Experience
  • Experience working in live theatre production
  • Experience managing a schedule for a shared space
  • Experience working with theatrical unions and guilds
Required Skills
  • Excellent customer service skills 
  • Excellent organizational skills. 
  • The ability to collaborate with teams and individuals across a large and diverse public institution 
  • The ability to quickly learn new technologies with which they are not yet familiar
  • Familiarity with the theatre communities in New York
  • Ability to operate video recording equipment
  • Ability to hang lights on a grid in low ceiling black box space.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with software commonly used in professional theatrical production (Q-Lab, Isadora, Autocad, Vectorworks)
  • Familiarity with conventional and intelligent fixtures, ETC Eos Programming, and hanging focusing instruments in both traditional and unconventional spaces
