Rural Health Group, Inc. is Hiring a Medical Assistant Apprentice - Multiple Sites Near Roanoke Rapids, NC

Rural Health Group, a multi-location Community Health Center in northeastern North Carolina, is seeking 3-4 participants to join our Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program.
The Medical Assistant Apprentice (MAA) role is to perform Medical Assistant duties while studying toward certification, within limits of current training by learning and developing practical skills, participating in classes and workshops on and offsite of Community Health Centers (CHCs), observing all health and safety codes, completing tests and assignments, as well as delivering presentations to staff, patients, and other stakeholders. The MAA should be well-organized, enthusiastic, flexible with schedules, and willing to assist wherever needed. Curriculum and work is guided and overseen by a healthcare supervisor at the assigned Community Health Center location.
The Medical Assistant Apprentice will work under the supervision of an assigned trainer, and under the general direction of the designated manager/supervisor.
This is a paid apprenticeship ($14.50/hr) and is benefit eligible.

APPRENTICE ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Attend workshops and participate in as many learning opportunities as possible
  • Assist within the relevant department, but also learn about other aspects of the Community Healthcare Center (CHC).
  • Observe health and safety procedures.
  • Complete all tests, presentations, and other required assessments.
  • Work in the local CHC and travel to other sites when required or needed.
  • Outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to make presentations to various audiences.
  • Extremely organized and a self-starter.
  • Strategic thinker with strong interpersonal skills, including ability to work as a team member and leader.
  • Positively receive feedback from supervisors.
  • Attend meetings and offer suggestions for improvement.
  • Build professional relationship with colleagues, vendors, and patients.
  • Motivational interviewing skills
  • Detailed attention to ensuring & documenting quality measures/health screenings
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
  • Assist healthcare professionals with procedures and treatments as trained and directed.
  • Perform administrative duties including patient check in and out, scheduling appointments, referrals, and follow-ups, obtaining signatures, insurance verifications, and directing phone calls.
  • Assist in delivering excellent patient care under the direction of a licensed clinic professional.
  • Patient and community education.
  • Performs rooming and/or intake process including vital signs, height, weight, and data collection related to patient's reason for visit.
  • Collects patient and family data, including medical and social history. Reviews patient's current medication list, allergies, and preferred pharmacy.
  • Assists the provider as directed, during treatments, examinations, and procedures. Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy. Administers medications under designated manager / supervisor.
  • Performs tests, for example EKG, eye exams, under designated manager / supervisor. Reviews the patient record to determine whether patient requires any routine health screenings.
  • Ensures exam/procedure room contains appropriate supplies, equipment, forms, and educational materials are available and ready for use during visit/procedure. Prepares, cleans, stocks, and maintains exam and treatment rooms.
  • Provides patient with after-visit, follow-up, self-care, or procedural instructions and/or educational materials as directed.
  • Assists with patient registration, check in/check out, appointment scheduling, and scheduling of tests and treatments. Answers clinic telephone and assists in-basket under designated manager/supervisor.
  • Assist as directed with care and case management duties, ie. SoDH
  • Documenting clinical intake in the electronic health record
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Good physical strength and hand-eye coordination may be required.
  • Good time management, critical and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • A growth mindset and passion for learning.
  • Possess a passion to work in rural healthcare setting.
  • Driver's license recommended.
  • Will be required to obtain Basic Life Support Certification from American Heart Association as part of the MAA.
  • Health care experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position as outlined below.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage positively with patients and families and to work as a team with staff and providers.
  • Ability to use a computer to document required information into the electronic medical record.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Interest in becoming a Medical Assistant
EOE. Federal and State Criminal Background Checks and Drug Screen required for all positions. Influenza vaccine is also a condition of employment.
