JOB TITLE: Building Mechanic

DEPARTMENT: Building Operations

REPORTS TO: Director, Building Operations or Designee

CLASSIFICATION: Full-time,Non-Exempt

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: Museum Based

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Director, Building Operations or Designee the Building Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and operating all HVAC and auxiliary equipment. To perform minor repairs to all electrical, plumbing, HVAC & VAV controls, and all related building systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operate and maintain heating and ventilating installations that do not require an operator’s license. 
  • Inspect, adjust, make minor and emergency repairs to pumps, steam lines, valves, steam traps, regulating devices, water & drainage systems.
  • Repair and maintain all HVAC systems.
  • Complete routine inspections and maintenance of all mechanical equipment, including major and minor repairs to pumps, motors, fans, steam traps, regulating devices and HVAC controls.
  • Perform minor repairs to plumbing equipment, painting machinery, and piping furniture and equipment. 
  • Handle electrical systems including but not limited to lighting, switches, controls, wiring, fans and fixtures, single and three phase motors, motor starters, and generator sets.
  • Perform building repairs including but not limited to glass repair, locks, hinges, doors, and other hardware.
  • Troubleshoot electrical problems throughout the building.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

High school diploma, GED equivalent, or four-year trade/vocational school required. Must have a third-class refrigeration operator’s license or equivalent, demonstrated paid work experience, or the ability to obtain one, within one (1) year of appointment to the position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

  • Working knowledge of methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the operations, repair, and maintenance of large facilities.
  • Experience with operations, repair, and maintenance of large, complex building and its mechanical, electrical, plumbing and control systems.
  • Ability to read electrical diagrams and troubleshoot electrical problems throughout the building.
  • Certified Refrigeration Journeyman or Certified HVAC tech.
  • Experienced in DDC controls (i.e. Siemens and Johnson Controls) and Climate controlled computer room systems (i.e. Liebert systems).
  • Knowledge and experience in troubleshooting and repairing various pumps.
  • Knowledge and experience in troubleshooting steam systems, steam traps, humidifiers, and condensate receiver tanks.
  • Must be able to make repairs to Refrigeration and Air conditioning systems.
  • Ability to identify challenges and opportunities, engage others in their resolution, and recommend appropriate course of action.
  • Ability to respond calmly and make decisions in urgent and emergency situations.
  • Demonstrated skills to prioritize and complete multiple tasks to meet deadlines and goals.
  • Ability to work occasional weekend and evening hours for special events (as needed).
  • Must be proficient in the latest version of Office 365. 
  • Must have proficiency in the use of remote work technology such as scheduling with, connecting to, and using digital collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive, and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires occasional heavy work, and the ability to independently lift and carry a variety of materials, tools and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs., as well as the ability to manage heavier items with mechanical assistance. The position requires high visual acuity to ensure the safe use of tools and materials, and the proper operation of vehicles and equipment. Working indoors and outdoors may require exposure to seasonal temperature extremes. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and exchange accurate information using various methods including in-person, telephone, and email.
