Distinguishing Features of Work

This is skilled work in which the employee is responsible for transmitting and receiving messages promptly and for dispatching proper equipment and personnel to expedite work operations.

Work involves some clerical activity which relates to dispatching duties. This employee works with considerable independence, but supervision is available on difficult assignments and in emergency situations.

Bargaining Unit : Service Employee's International (SEIU)

Employees within the department of division shall be given first consideration

Current Openings : Workdays and Hours - Monday - Friday 3 : 30pm - 12 : 00am

Examples of Work Performed

  • Transmits and receives radio calls between a central office and field crews. Dispatches crews to work locations and maintains necessary records.
  • Answers the telephone and initiates emergency calls to proper supervisor and personnel.
  • Explains relevant laws, regulations and procedures to internal and external callers.
  • Looks up information in computer and transmits to other personnel.
  • May summarize activity information for administrative use.
  • Logs all radio transmissions and checks activity logs.
  • May relieve other personnel on a temporary basis.
  • Reports defects or malfunctions of equipment to a supervisor.
  • Water Distribution positions :
  • Generates, updates, and closes electronic work orders.
  • Submits requests for utility locates.
  • Weekend dispatcher may do field work to help aid water service representatives.

  • Other related duties may be assigned as needed.

Requirements of Work

  • Ability to learn, within a reasonable period of time, proper techniques for operating a radio and dispatching personnel and equipment
  • Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to learn and use computer software related to a specific position
  • Ability to receive and repeat information accurately and quickly
  • Ability to speak clearly
  • Ability to keep simple records
  • Ability to read and interpret a city map
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Required Experience and Training

Two years of work experience in water utility field preferred.

1 year of customer service experience required.

1 year of call center experience preferred.

  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
