Job Summary:

Persons filling this position will assist production staff including Welders, Fabricators, Shift Leads, and others in preparing product and parts as they are produced. This includes loading and unloading of freight, company deliveries, weld prep, post-weld clean-up, cleaning/washing steel, moving material, shop housekeeping, basic machine maintenance, and other activities critical in supporting the manufacturing process. The objective of the Material Handler/Helper role is to assist in any way necessary assuring that the operation is running as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Job Scope:

This job has recurring work situations with occasional variations from the norm. Material Handlers/Helper can expect stressful situations sometimes required to meet customer expectations and the company’s financial goals.

Duties are performed under the indirect supervision of the Production Manager and direct supervision of the Production Lead. When assisting specific personnel or teams’ direction on specific task will come from those that you are working with.

The ability to multi-task and to take direction/requests from multiple people may be necessary at times. Where applicable, using established procedures and guidelines will be required and strict adherence is expected. Errors in accuracy, judgment, service, and a lack of professionalism affects the smooth and efficient operation of the company ultimately impacting the profitability of the company as well as customer satisfaction.

Essential Functions/Major Duties: include but not limited to the following:

• Loading and unloading of flatbed trucks, which may include the receiving of materials from vendors.
• Deliver and pick-up materials in company flatbeds.
• Maintain a clean and safe working environment and a hazard free workplace, free of obstructions and obstacles.
• Handling and working with metal in a variety of capacities.
• Working with power tools and equipment common to the steel manufacturing industry.
• Perform cutting and hole making operations using plasma and/or oxyfuel cutting tools.
• Handling and of materials both with lift-trucks as well as by hand.
• Working with hydraulic and pneumatic tools.
• Work in a safe and careful manner practicing good use of personal protective equipment and exemplary safety when handling or transporting materials and working around others.
• Actively participate as a member of the Western Utility Telecom Team and aid in the development of processes with Continuous Improvement as an ongoing objective.
• Report deficiencies in equipment or safety hazards/concerns.

Secondary Functions:

• Tasks or projects as assigned by the Production Manager.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None

Specific Skills:

· Operations of material handling equipment such as pallet jacks, forklifts, carts, dollies, etc.

· Knowledge of structural steel shapes, sizes, and material grades.

· Fabrication layout; the use of measuring tapes, protractors, divider heads, micrometers, etc.

·Good oral communication skills.

·Good written penmanship.

· Knowledge of equipment related to structural steel fabrication, their uses and limitations.

·General shop safety and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Standards of Performance

· Communicate all critical items to supervisors and coworkers.

· Maintain a good working relationship with employees, customers, subcontractors and vendors when those interactions occur.

·Consistently displays the ability to recognize and deal with priorities.

Compensation

Hourly wages consistent with market research on similar positions in Oregon.

Education and/or Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Minimum of 1 year experience in a manufacturing/production environment.

Job Conditions:

• This position may involve repetitive activities, the use of geometry or advanced math, the operation of electric and/or hydraulic cutting and hole making equipment, hand tools, plasma cutters, propane/oxygen torches, and a variety of layout tools.
• Outdoor environmental conditions consistent with our locations; exposure to heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind may be required.
• Work may involve high exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, smoke, welding arcs, sparks, and excessive noise.
• Standard for a metal fabrication and welding shop.
• Hours may exceed 40 per week.

Physical Demands:

• Working conditions are consistent with the elements of a steel shop environment.
• At times elements of an office environment including exposure to ergonomic related issues due to repetitive use of computers may be necessary.
• Moderate exposure to grease, oil, and other chemical’s.
• Ability to stand, walk, stoop, bend, and kneel frequently.
• Moderate physical activity required on a regular basis.
• Requires handling of objects up to 50 lbs .
• Job may require standing and/or walking for more than four hours a day.
