503B FDA Registered Outsourcing Facility

In 2017 the 4,000 square foot Wells Pharmacy Network location in Dyersburg, Tennessee became an FDA Registered 503B Outsourcing Facility dedicated to the production of sterile implantable hormone pellets. By registering with the FDA, we are subject and intend to comply with the federal regulations and standards applicable to a 503B outsourcing facility. Compounding sterile implantable hormone pellets in compliance with the FDA’s standards for CGMP (current good manufacturing practices), just like the largest commercial drug manufacturers.

About the position

The Non Sterile Pharmacy Technician works collaboratively with other pharmacy technicians to make compounds under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This candidate must be focused on achieving individual and team productivity goals while maintaining a high level of accuracy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The pharmacy technician must conduct himself/herself in a professional manner in conformity with all applicable federal, state, and municipal laws and regulations in his/her relationship with the public, health care professions, and pharmacists.
  • The pharmacy technician may assist the pharmacist in performing the specific tasks designated in the appropriate SOP.
  • The pharmacy technician’s tasks are assigned and overseen by the supervising pharmacist.
  • The pharmacy technician’s performed tasks is checked and approved by the supervising pharmacist.
  • Other tasks performed by the pharmacy technician that is not defined as the practice of pharmacy, it will be considered a violation.
  • The pharmacy technician holds confidential all records concerning patients’ and physicians’ medication profile.
  • Printed records will be given only upon written consent by the actual person to whom the information pertains.
  • The pharmacy technician may obtain prescriber authorization for prescription refills, provided there are no changes in the prescription.
  • The pharmacy technician cannot make judgment calls regarding prescription information and filling that may affect the patient care.

Approved Tasks

  • Placing, packing, pouring, or putting in a container for dispensing, sale, distribution, transfer possession of, vending, or barter any drug, medicine, poison, or chemical which, under the laws of the United States or State in which the Pharmacy is located, may be sold or dispensed only on the prescription of a practitioner authorized by law to prescribe drugs, medicines, poisons, or chemicals. This shall also include the adding of water for reconstitution of oral antibiotic liquids.
  • Placing in or affixing upon any container a label required to be placed upon drugs, medicines, poisons, or chemicals sold or dispensed upon prescription of a practitioner authorized by law to prescribe those drugs, medicines, poisons, or chemicals.
  • Selecting, taking from, and replacing upon shelves in the prescription department of a pharmacy or apothecary drugs, medicines, chemicals, or poisons which are required by the law of the United States or the State in which the Pharmacy is located, to be sold or dispensed only on prescription of a practitioner authorized by law to prescribe them.
  • Preparing, typing, or writing labels (in a manual system) to be placed or affixed on any container in which a label is required to be placed upon drugs, medicines, poisons, or chemicals sold or dispensed upon prescription of a practitioner authorized by law to prescribe those drugs, medicines, poisons, or chemicals.
  • Enter information into the pharmacy computer (in a computer system). The pharmacy technician shall not make any judgment decisions which could affect patient care. The final verification of prescription information, entered into the computer, shall be made by the supervising pharmacist—prior to dispensing—who is then totally responsible for all aspects of the data and data entry.
  • Obtain prescriber authorization for prescription refills provided that nothing about the prescription is changed.
  • Prepackaging and labeling of multi-dose and unit-dose packages of medication. The pharmacist must establish the procedures, including the selection of containers, labels, and lot numbers, and must check the finished task.
  • Recording patient and medication information. The recording of patient or medication information in a manual or an electronic system for later validation by the pharmacist may be performed by pharmacy technicians.

Note: The pharmacy technician shall not make any judgment decisions which could affect patient care.

Compounding

The pharmacy technician may assist in the following tasks when the pharmacist has established a procedure for reconstitution of prefabricated no-injectable medication, bulk compounding, and/or preparation of parenteral products that establish the order of addition of ingredients, the point at which the ingredients will be checked by the pharmacist and the point at which the final product will be checked for integrity, correctness, and pharmaceutical elegance.

  • Compounding nonsterile and sterile preparations:
  • Bulk reconstitution of prefabricated non-injectable medication—may include the addition of multiple additives.
  • Bulk compounding.
  • This category may include such items as sterile bulk solutions for small volume injectables, sterile irrigating solutions, products prepared in relatively large volume for internal or external use by patients, and reagents or other products for the pharmacy or other departments of the facility.
  • Preparation of parenteral products.
  • Pharmacy technicians may (1) perform functions involving reconstitution of single or multiple dosage units that are to be administered to a given patient as a unit and (2) perform functions involving the addition of one manufacturer’s single dose or multiple unit doses of the same product to another manufacturer’s prepared unit to be administered to a patient. Pharmacy technicians shall notadd multiple ingredients in preparing parenteral products but may draw up or prepare the ingredients. The pharmacist must check the preparations and make the final addition.
  • Other
  • Pharmacy technicians may perform other functions as prescribed by the pharmacist-in-charge.
