Under general supervision, performs professional level library work of moderate difficulty in the Tom Green County Library System.

The position classification is distinguished from higher-level Librarian classifications by the degree of work complexity and a narrower scope of responsibilities and supervisory duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assists in management and operation of a major library division administering programs, resources, training, and services; assists in interviewing, training and management of staff and serves in absence of manager.

Performs professional level duties requiring advanced knowledge of library policies, procedures, systems, organization and department operations; instructs patrons on use of library, library resources, technology and equipment; understands and embraces new technologies and assists others on usage; exercises initiative and judgement in overseeing day to day operations, policy enforcement, and opening/closing procedures; resolves conflicts with patrons and general public.

Provides leadership toward continually improving department-wide services and processes; helps develop, coordinate and implement targeted programs to improve service consistent with library policies and management goals; seeks out and maintains positive relationships with external groups to identify community needs and enhance public services; assists in collection development and maintenance; participates in professional development activities and maintains knowledge of policies, procedures, and current trends in the industry; attends training and professional organization meetings; other duties as assigned.

Youth Services: Manages the Youth Services department of the Tom Green County Library System; supervises support staff and oversees collection, operations, programming and activities of department. responsible for ordering materials in various format; develops policies procedures for department; engages in ongoing marketing and public relations efforts to promote teen services; creates flyers, brochures and marketing material to promote and increase library usage, services, programs and activities; plans and executes unique programming targeting youth; seeks out partnerships with community agencies, schools and organizations; provides reference, computer and reader’s advisory services to young adults; attends workshops and educational meetings relating to young adult services; instructs patrons on use of library, library resources, technology and equipment.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Extensive knowledge of professional library practices related to assigned areas of expertise such as reference, branch operations, children’s services or digital literacy and a strong working knowledge of technology, integrated library systems, and computer programs; solid commitment to customer service; ability to communicate effectively and professionally with library patrons and other staff; ability to adapt to changing work environment; ability to serve in leadership role and provide supervisory duties; ability to learn new technologies, machinery, and approaches to presenting technology for others; knowledge of library resources, books, authors and reader interests.

Physical Requirements and Work Setting:

Works in a pleasant, air-conditioned work environment; prolonged periods of walking, standing, carrying, bending, and reaching; periodic lifting up to 20 lbs; visual acuity and basic manual dexterity required.

Education and/or Experience Required:

Possession of Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science and two years of full-time experience in a library or comparable setting, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
