The Town of East Hartford seeks to hire full-time, qualified Maintainer IIs for the Department of Public Works in its Parks and Highway Divisions. Positions work in all types of weather conditions.
The Town of East Hartford does conduct random drug screenings as mandated by the Department of Transportation. Skill testing will be conducted as part of the hiring process
 
This position does not offer remote duties of any nature.
 
Applicants with expertise in any of the areas below may apply:
 
Landscaping expertise including operating landscaping equipment, background with tree care and tree-trimming, roadside mowing, hardscape masonry, property maintenance of decorative vegetation, snow plowing operations.
 
Expertise in road maintenance and construction including milling and paving, drainage and storm system pipe repair, masonry, curb installation, roadway snow plowing operations.
 
Mandatory overtime required for snow removal and emergency events. Workweek is 40 hours with a salary range of $56,035.20 to $63,065.60 plus overtime and benefits. Regular hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.

• Receives oral instructions from Foreman or lead worker, who reviews work in progress.
• Prepares truck and auxiliary equipment.
• Services truck and equipment with fuel, lubricants, and accessories.
• Makes routine safety check before and after operating truck and equipment.
• Observes performance of equipment and reports malfunctions to mechanic.
• Operates dump truck to haul and remove materials; plows and sands roads.
• Operates equipment to mow roadsides, fields, and town grounds; to clear storm drains and to repair or clear roads.
• Uses jack-hammer, chain saws, and hand tools in general maintenance work such as cleaning catch basins and culverts, and clearing roadsides. 
• Repairs and installs fences, street signs, guard rails, and roadside equipment.
• Follows standard safety procedures and regulations.
• Reports tasks accomplished verbally to Foreman. 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

• Assists in the repair and construction of catch basins.
• Performs manual work in the laying of pipe, patching or resurfacing roads, and related construction and maintenance work.
• Routinely performs tasks of maintainers of lower grade. 

Receives general supervision from the Foreman or lead worker.

• The skills and knowledge required would be acquired with one year of labor or maintenance experience and experience in the safe operation of trucks.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
• Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in or from standardized situations.
• Ability to safely operate trucks and other motor vehicles.
• Ability to recognize the need for vehicle repairs and maintenance.
• Ability to lift and/or carry objects weighing 25-50 pounds.
• May be required to lift heavier weights occasionally.
• Ability to operate equipment requiring manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude.
• Ability to work occasionally in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
• Sufficient stamina and good health to perform strenuous physical labor.
