Position/Title: Medical and Surgical Coordinator
Pay Status: Hourly
General Purpose and Objective
Provides professional care in booking of the surgical patient along with helping the patient prior to surgery with all orthopaedic needs. Maintains physician schedules.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
1) Books Surgeries with 5 hospitals and 3 out patient centers
2) Be able to book STAT Surgeries as first priority.
3) Check current account status prior to booking surgery
4) Works with the billing office – regarding setting up payment schedule for self-pay patients.
5) Obtains pre-certification and verification of benefits with insurance companies. Document information.
6) Obtains insurance referrals when appropriate
7) Coordinates all equipment, supplies and ancillary care required for each surgery and per MD protocols.
8) Coordinates surgical time for MD's and assists in surgery with other offices.
9) Assists with scheduling of pre-operative tests and being alert to medical flags such as cardiac issues and arranges for pre and post operative attention as necessary.
10) Prepares all x-rays and medical paperwork for surgery each day
11) Transports x-rays to appropriate hospitals for MDs as needed
12) Issues out pt and in pt materials and prepares them. Assists in applications and patient instructions.
13) Available for all patient questions and issues regarding surgery.
14) Makes all post operative appointments for all surgical patients
15) Notification to pre operative patients of all pertinent information regarding upcoming surgery schedule.
16) Makes post operative calls to patient and documents in chart.
17) Collects information and forms for outcomes Data Study. Mail results as needed.
18) Coordinates post operative billing reqs with operative reports for the billing office.
19) Assists in office clinics as needed as medical or x-ray staff.
20) Travel between offices may be required.
21) Office duties as necessary
Physical Requirements of Position / Special Conditions of Job
Requires working under stressful conditions and working occasional OT as needed. Work is performed in the medical setting. Involves frequent interruptions and contact with MDs, staff patients and their families.
Qualifications
Minimum of 1 year surgical experience (preferred)
Knowledge of medical terminology and medical office procedure and skills.
Being able to handle stressful situations and able to prioritize due to the busy nature of the orthopaedic practice.
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, patients.
Strong computer skills necessary.
Knowledge of CPT and ICD codes.
RN/LPN/MA or other relevant orthopedic experience a plus!
