Knik Tribe is Hiring an Aquatic Wildlife Project Coordinator Near Palmer, AK

Project Coordinator - Will support the Chief Scientist in the BIA funded Strengthening Knik Tribes’ Co-Stewardship of Aquatic Wildlife Resources in Cook Inlet, Alaska: Gathering Knowledge to Ensure Long-Term Food Sovereignty by Learning from the Past, Taking Stock of the Present, and Planning for the Future project. The primary goal of this project is to answer the following question, what is the temporal and spatial overlap between Cook Inlet beluga whales and their prey, how has climate change affected these dynamics, and what can be predicted about future trends.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will:

· Meet the primary components of the project:

· Collection of Indigenous Knowledge (IK) and Local Knowledge (LK).

· Collaborate with project team members who will be collecting fisheries data (via in-stream sampling and eDNA) and beluga data (via surveys and eDNA).

· Organize and lead field campaigns to collect IK and LK along with partners in office and field settings.

· Work with Project Team to develop and follow established protocols for collection of traditional knowledge on belugas and their potential prey and predators.

· Work with subject matter experts to develop protocols for collecting and documenting IK and LK.

· Conduct and record interviews with Tribal knowledge holders in a respectful and culturally sensitive manner.

· Maintain metadata for graphical or statistical analysis and incorporate results into tables, figures, maps, and other products as needed for reports and publications.

· Identify and develop funding proposal for long-term continuation of the project.

· Provide logistical support to Chief Scientist and team leads, which may include securing permits and land-access agreements, hosting webinars and in-person meetings, and assisting with required project reporting and outreach.

· Perform all other duties as assigned.

Required Requirements:

· University degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Biological Oceanography, Marine Science, Social Science, or related fields of study.

· Two (2) years’ experience working with federally funded projects preferred.

· Good verbal and written communication skills and an ability to adjust communication style and content depending on the situation and context.

· Ability to troubleshoot traditional knowledge collection protocols and develop new procedures to meet evolving project goals.

· Willing to learn statistical software for data analysis, management, and visualization.

· Willing to travel to fishing sites and knowledge holder homes and community spaces, attend meetings, communicate with fisheries (commercial, subsistence, sport) and other knowledge-holders in person or remotely.

· The successful candidate will be organized, detailed-oriented, able to maintain records, and work both independently and collaboratively with co-workers and partners.

· Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.

· Clean state and federal background check.

Supervisor: Chief Scientist

Schedule: Monday – Friday; 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

Salary: $28.50 - $33.50 per hour DOE/E. Full time employees will receive full benefits to include: Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB) medical, dental, vision, life insurance, paid leave and holidays, and retirement plan with matching contributions.
