Maine People's Alliance is Hiring an Organizing Fellow Near Bangor, ME

Maine People’s Alliance is Hiring

Maine People's Alliance (MPA) is a community of Maine people, from all different backgrounds, who believe that we can live in a world where everyone has what they need, everyone contributes what they can, and nobody is left behind.

While there are more than enough resources to meet everyone’s basic needs, a small number of wealthy interests use tactics like racism to divide us, maintaining a society where they benefit at everyone else’s expense. That is why we must overcome division with community, cynicism with relentless moral courage, changing – not accepting – what is politically possible.

MPA community organizers and organizing fellows are responsible for helping the organization build a multi-racial, multi-class movement by recruiting new members, developing their leadership, and building a volunteer team that works to advance the priorities of the organization.

We are currently accepting applications for a part time, temporary Organizing Fellow to work for a period of up to six months. The ideal candidate should be interested in this role as part of exploring a career in social change and/or in building a new set of skills to apply to existing social change volunteer work in Maine.

Community Organizing Fellows

The responsibilities of these positions will include supporting MPA’s campaigns through:

Leading a local electoral program

Recruiting new and existing MPA members

Identifying leadership potential in MPA volunteers, and developing work plans that provide opportunities for new skills and leadership opportunities

Supporting other campaign activities as they arise

A qualified applicant should possess:

Direct, lived experience with injustice (of any kind) that anchors a desire for progressive social change

Self-motivation and an ability to successfully work independently, as part of a team, and as a team leader.

Ability to inspire others to action

Ability to move multiple projects and prioritize

A willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings and occasional weekends

Experience that is helpful but not necessary:

Experience in door-to-door organizing

At least one year of community organizing experience or community-building work

Fluency in Spanish, French, Arabic, or Somali are welcome

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

These positions are based in Maine and will report to MPA’s Organizing Director, Genevieve Lysen.

The Organizing Fellow position is part time at up to 20 hours a week, with flexible scheduling and paid hourly at $21 an hour.

MPA is an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to equity and inclusion. Core to our work is an understanding of the multiple ways in which society is constructed to disadvantage and marginalize people of color, LGBTQ people, immigrants, native peoples, women, low-income people, people with disabilities, and others. We believe that underrepresented and marginalized communities must be centered in the work we do and we strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or from these communities.

Geographies: we are looking for applicants that can cover the Bangor area, but are willing to consider other regions/geographies if we have a compelling applicant.
