This is manual, semi-skilled, and skilled work maintaining park facilities. Work involves the inspection, repair, and maintenance of facilities, playgrounds, systems, and structures within the division. Work also involves coordinating the needs of buildings with Facilities Management, to ensure that Parks are operating in a safe and efficient manner.

Essential Duties
  • Serves as Lead Worker. Acts as lead worker of two to three maintenance workers or park attendants which includes overseeing the work of others and assigning tasks at the direction of the Superintendent. Determines work procedures to be followed to reach work goals while promoting efficiency, productivity and safety among crew members. Recommends personnel actions and need of additional staff to Supervisors.
  • Performs park maintenance. Performs major and minor carpentry tasks to effect Parks C.I.P, repairs existing park structures, layout carpentry improvements and repair and replace roofs, siding, trusses as needed. Installs and repairs small plumbing improvements, also minor electrical repairs to include wiring of lights and equipment as needed. Performs masonry tasks with layout of concrete foundations, finishing concrete slabs and sidewalks, and laying concrete blocks. Paints new parks for improvement, cleans and paints existing park structures. Serves as a liaison for Facilities Management by recommending repairs and large-scale maintenance and projects.
  • Performs maintenance and equipment operations. Operate and maintain various types of light and heavy equipment in park projects. Account for assigned power tools, mowers, tractors and vehicles assigned to your responsibility. Performs ground and park maintenance duties and complete inspection duties as required. Completes requisitions for materials and supplies necessary to complete assigned tasks. Inspects, lubricates, and operates all power tools and equipment according to manufacturer's specifications. Sharpens, fixes and/or repairs all hand tools necessary to perform maintenance tasks.
Other Important Or Marginal DutiesCompiles material lists for various projects and fills out paperwork for permits, materials, and purchasing as necessary. Maintains records and complies with procedures associated with purchasing cards. Informs public of County policies and procedures, Division policies and procedures, state, federal and local laws as applicable to the work assignments, and County general use rules of facilities. Maintains daily log book to record work assignments, materials expended, et cetera.
DIFFICULTY Independent judgment is required to make decisions in construction methods when supervision is not available. Large improvements in parks are often impacted by other maintenance or repair emergencies that require shifts in attention. Problem solving is exercised when deciding how to compete a project on time with available materials, while ensuring that complete work is safe to the public.
ResponsibilitySupervision ReceivedThis position's duties are somewhat defined and periodically checked. This position has access to supervisor and/or lead co-worker when needed.
Supervision Of OthersEmployee does not officially supervise; however, employee performs lead worker assignments that may include overseeing the work of others and assigning tasks at the direction of the Superintendent.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMER CONTACT Work requires interaction with park users and contact with Operations personnel to borrow or lend equipment to complete projects.
EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS USEDSome equipment and tools used in this position are a personal computer, adding machine/basic calculator, car and/or light truck, large truck, tractor with front-end loader, backhoe attachments, tree spade, and small hand tools associated with carpentry and finish construction.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work is performed mainly outdoors. Work environmental factors include exposure to vapors, fumes, chemicals, odors, inclement weather conditions, exposure to insects and animals, et cetera. Physical demands require lifting in excess of 50 pounds. Physical demands include crawling, stooping, kneeling, balancing, climbing, reaching, handling, et cetera.

  • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals, specifications, blueprints, and construction drawings.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal permitting requirements, OSHA standards, and other construction requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSRequires a high school diploma or an equivalent and two years of job-related experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
  • Must possess a valid State of Florida Class "E" operator's license and have a favorable driving record.
  • A Playground Safety Inspector Certification is preferred, however, certification must be attained within 18 months)
  • A CDL Class "B" operator's license with an "N" endorsement is preferred.
  • All Leon County employees (regular full-time and part-time, OPS, and PRN) are required to work before, during and after a Declared Local State of Emergency (DLSOE). Participation is considered a condition of employment.
