Hood Lumber is Hiring a Dry Sorter Operator Near Waynesboro, MS

We are looking for a dry sorter operator to join our team. In this role, you will be required to sort lumber, operate, and ensure that the tools, machines, and equipment are properly maintained. If you thrive on working in a safety-oriented team environment with ongoing learning, this may be the job for you.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operates sorter at production target speeds.
Monitors all sorter bays to make sure boards are dropping correctly and lowers bays as they become full.
Screens lumber as it enters and flows through the sorter to make certain lumber is sorted by length and dimension.
Observes the trash bay and reports excessive number of boards being dropped. Trouble shoots to determine problems (i.e., broken bay, tipple not firing, etc.).
Drops lumber from the bays onto the haul out chains ensuring lumber packs are not “split” or damaged.
Keeps lumber flowing through the sorter to prevent cross-ups and jams and quickly and safely clears cross-ups and jams to avoid downtime.
Reports excessive amount of or constantly reoccurring (even if minor in nature) issues that are causing downtime.
Understands the importance of machine guarding (handrails, chains, individual metal guards), inspects work area to make sure all guards are in place while working, and stays out of guarded areas unless properly locked out.
Reports damaged equipment to the supervisor or lead person.
Wear all the required PPE, especially fall protection harness, when in the sorter.
Follows all company safety rules and policies and keeps assigned area clean (catwalk, sorter cubbies, under sorter haul out chains).
Carefully performs lock out and strap changing procedures.

REQUIREMENTS:

Meets the physical and safety requirements of the job, such as lifting up to 50 lbs. and working in a hot humid, cold, and noisy industrial environment, while working rotating shifts, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
Punctuality, ability to work alone and as part of a group, safety consciousness, and good problem-solving skills are required.
Understands and follows oral or written instructions issued by supervisor.
Ability to communicate effectively with other operators/supervisors.
Willing to stand for extended periods of time (11–12-hour shifts).
