Ophthalmic Assistant

Department: Clinical

Reports To:Technician Manager

Job Summary: This individual is responsible for providing chair-side doctor assistance, performing diagnostic tests as required by physician, and administering treatment as allowed and ordered by the physician.

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Two years experience in a healthcare setting: ophthalmology preferred.

• Knowledge of medical and ophthalmic terminology.

• Demonstrated computer literacy.

Responsibilities:

• Communication and Patient Care

• Uses autorefractor and lensometers (automatic and manual).
• Performs visual field tests.
• Performs visual acuity and pinhole tests.
• Performs brightness acuity measurement as requested by the physician.
• Performs TearLab tests as ordered by the physician.
• Monitors patient flow, ensuring the physician exam rooms are always full.
• Acts as a scribe for physician
• Escorts patients to front desk after exam.
• Provides patient with paperwork as necessary
• Calls in prescriptions for patients
• Performs diagnostic tests as ordered by the physician

2. Patient Education:

• Reviews the use of Amsler grid testing with patient for at-home monitoring.
• Reviews physician instructions with the patient.
• Provides appropriate patient education materials as directed by the physician

3. Administrative

• Ensures that exam rooms are tidied between patients and at end of day, including sinks and sanitizing equipment.
• Cleans all lenses used by doctors.
• Opens rooms, turns on equipment, ensures all rooms are stocked at the beginning of the day.
• Closes rooms and empties trash at the end of day.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• High School Graduate required
