This is a continuous recruitment and can be closed at any time without notice.First Review: 6/7/2024This position will receive a 3% Cost of Living Adjustment effective 6/30/2024Assist the public in locating and selecting legal reference materials, researching legal issues, and using library services; teach basic legal research techniques to patrons using print and electronic legal resources and reference tools; process library materials, including receiving, cataloguing, classifying, collating, binding and shelving reference and resource materials; file reference materials alphabetically, numerically and chronologically; receive and record payments for photocopier and library services; maintain accurate cataloguing and indexing systems and inventory; monitor use of all library resources and maintain security of the same; establish and maintain good working relationships with library patrons, County Departments, and other libraries; operate office equipment; maintain the quiet and orderly operation of the library; prepare invoices, deposit records, reports, correspondence and memoranda; process interlibrary loan requests; attend professional meetings and continuing education training sessions as directed; recommend proposals to the Law Library Director for modifying, improving and expanding services and materials.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation- Completion of an approved Paralegal training program
Experience - Three (3) years’ experience researching and drafting legal documents, preferably
supplemented with courses in legal research and legal office practices may be substituted for the educational requirement.
Knowledge of– Various legal resource materials and documents, key concepts of law and legal terminology, general practices, procedures, and jurisdictions of California and Federal courts; legal research methods and techniques including drafting legal documents and writings; personal computers and office applications, including legal research applications; legal office and general clerical practices and procedures; information needs of law library users and methods and techniques of the reference process; effective customer service methods and techniques.
Skill/Ability to– Use patience, tact and courtesy with the public to communicate effectively with persons of various ages, educational and socioeconomic backgrounds, and emotional states; establish priorities and adjust to workload changes; locate and research legal references and citations; read and analyze legal documents; retain and recall information; perform work with accuracy and attention to detail; work independently; collect and organize information, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; conduct electronic legal research and train patrons to use the systems; learn new computer technology, applications, office automation and related equipment; understand, interpret and apply established policies and procedures; update and maintain legal material and library records, process mail and deposits; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish effective working relationships with staff and public; recognize and maintain confidentiality of information and reference services in compliance with department policies; plan, prepare and present training to public and groups; lift at least thirty-five (35) pounds.
Conditions of Employment
Candidates selected will be required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. Additionally, a background investigation may also be conducted, which may include a re-investigation every 10 years for some positions.
