REPORTS TO: School Administration & EC Director
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 months
SALARY: Teacher Assistant Pay Grade
FLSA EXEMPT/NON-EXEMPT: Non-Exempt
 
Clay County Schools Behavior Support Teacher Assistant positions are grant-funded.
Any positions funded through this grant source are subject to annual grant approval.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education (must have one of the following):
    • Associate degree or higher with an overall 2.5 or higher GPA from an accredited institution; OR
    • 48 semester hours which include core courses with an overall 2.5 or higher GPA from an accredited institution; OR
    • WorkKeys Testing Score Report with the following scores:
      • Applied Math - Minimum score 4
      • Workplace Documents - Minimum score 4
      • Business Writing - Minimum score 3
      • In addition to WorkKeys, employee must complete 2 college courses in math, reading or technology within 2 academic years at their own expense and have a 2.5 or higher GPA from an accredited institution.
  • Must be at least 19 years of age to work with PK-8th grade students and 21 years of age to work with 9th-12th grade students.
  • Must have or be willing to participate in ongoing behavior support training.

NATURE OF WORK
A Behavior Support Assistant (BSA) is a teacher assistant who could be assigned to work in one or all schools in the district under ongoing supervision of the district Behavior Support Liaison, Special Education and classroom teachers, and school administration. Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical and clerical tasks in assisting and supervising students with behavior support needs. The BSA may perform a wide range of tasks to support the efforts of the teacher, meet the needs of all students, and ensure the provision of quality instruction for all students. The BSA provides one-on-one assistance with academic and behavioral support and may lead small group activities.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Student behavior support throughout the school day.
  • Provide social skills training for students.
  • Training and support of behavior interventions and documentation.
  • Constantly monitors the safety and well-being of students, particularly when student is participating in an inclusive activity; motivate students through positive behavior interventions, monitors student attitudes and encourages self-esteem; and assists students with becoming increasingly independent.
  • Monitors student behavior and helps maintain discipline in the classroom; records time out and in class suspension; assists with crisis prevention; restrains students as needed; .
  • Supports teacher in the process of identifying appropriate interventions, designing intervention plans, Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention plans for the purpose of providing a safe and effective educational environment for students with challenging behaviors.
  • Works closely with other certified student support personnel to ensure that any necessary data is being collected to support progress monitoring efforts which can lead to additional student support through outside agencies.
  • Make necessary contacts to certified staff as necessary in student crisis situations.
  • Participate and function as a positive team member for the purpose of enhancing and sharing knowledge and skills for implementation of best practices to meet the needs of assigned students.
  • Assists students with learning: reinforces and clarifies instructions; adapts instruction, creating and modifying materials to match student abilities as needed; conducts short sessions on improving study skills; modifies tests for students; provides one-on-one assistance as needed.
  • Maintains standardized records and documentation concerning the progress of students.
  • Performs general housekeeping duties in maintaining an orderly classroom; performs repair and maintenance tasks related to school equipment.
  • Performs various clerical duties as needed, maintains records of student progress; develops and files incident reports; grades student papers and scores tests; checks daily attendance; operate common office equipment; develops classroom display and instructional materials; maintains and operates audiovisual equipment; maintains class files, etc.
  • Collaborate with school personnel to design a meditative, reflective program to support school-wide expectations and practices.
  • Feeds students, when necessary; toilets students, if needed; and assists with any other tasks students are not able to perform for themselves.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the principals.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, equipment for children with special needs, etc. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
  • Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Requires the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
