Deputy Building Official

City of Newnan, GA

The City of Newnan is looking for a qualified professional to serve as Deputy Building Official. Under the general direction of the Chief Building Official, performs difficult skilled technical and administrative work conducting building inspections for code compliance, enforcing building and zoning codes and related ordinances, providing information to the public, preparing and maintaining records and reports, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Building Department daily operations including, code enforcement, building inspections, building permit processing and required reporting.
  • Manage the selection, training, professional development and evaluation of staff.
  • Maintain filing system, to include accurate records retention for ease of access.
  • Communicate with developers, contractors, architects and general public regarding building permits and construction projects.
  • Enforce a variety of City ordinances and codes relating to zoning, building and housing; oversee issuance of correction notices and citations.
  • Enforce construction codes as mandated by the State of Georgia, Department of Community Affairs.
  • Review and approve construction plans and specifications, monitor compliance with applicable building codes and regulations.
  • Identify action necessary for ordinance updates, repair or demolition of buildings for presentation to Council for consideration; Manage changes, repair, demolition of structures.
  • Work with Fire Marshall regarding enforcement of State Fire Codes.
  • Investigate code complaints, non-compliance in a timely and effective resolution process and manage communication.
  • Participate in Building/Trade Organizations, meetings, trainings and activities.
  • Prepare and administer annual Building Department budget.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED with coursework in building construction, mechanical or civil engineering, architecture, building construction, or related field and extensive experience in building, plumbing, electrical and construction trades including some supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Possession of International Code Council certification as Commercial Building Inspector and Two additional Commercial Inspector certifications upon hire
    • Ability to obtain certification as a Commercial Building Plans Examiner and one additional Commercial Plans Examiner certification within 18 months of hire

Selected candidate will be required to successfully complete Background check, Motor vehicle history, and Pre-employment drug screen.
