Job Description:
C2ES seeks a highly qualified and committed individual to fill the position of U.S. Policy Fellow to advance our work on domestic climate and energy policies and actions. This position provides an exciting opportunity to join a team committed to effective and ambitious climate action, and will involve assessing the federal policy landscape, developing policy approaches that can help achieve our climate goals, and supporting growing stakeholder engagement efforts at C2ES. The U.S. Policy Fellow will report to the Director for U.S. Policy and Outreach.
Requirements
Major responsibilities:
  • Work with policy makers, leading companies on C2ES's Business Environmental Leadership Council, and other C2ES staff to develop and advocate for high-impact climate and energy policies to achieve U.S. climate targets;
  • Monitor, track, and report on U.S. domestic climate policy developments including both administrative and legislative actions;
  • Contribute to thought leadership on market-based approaches to address climate change, and on smart climate and trade policies;
  • Research and analyze state and federal policies and other policies as needed;
  • Develop and contribute to written material, including blog posts, other topical web content, and policy briefs;
  • Represent C2ES at relevant events in Washington by other think tanks, advocacy groups, Congress and federal agencies;
  • Support and conduct briefings on U.S. climate policy developments.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) expectations:
  • Participate in monthly all-staff DEI meetings;
  • Demonstrate commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment;
  • Complete trainings during on-boarding and on a yearly basis.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., economics, environmental or energy policy, environmental studies, political science) with at least four years of climate and energy experience OR a Master's degree in a related field with at least three years of climate and energy experience;
  • Top-notch writing, editing, research, and analytic skills;
  • Interdisciplinary understanding of climate change (economics, markets, technology, politics, etc.);
  • Ability to sort through dense and complicated information quickly;
  • Highly organized, with strong attention to detail;
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills;
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills;
  • Willingness to learn and to pitch in at all levels;
  • Commitment to, knowledge of, or experience in advancing issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and environmental/climate justice.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of climate and energy policies at the state and federal levels; experience with market-based policies (e.g., carbon tax/fee, cap and trade, emissions performance standard); familiarity with federal fiscal policy;
  • Knowledge of climate and trade policies and agreements (e.g., border carbon adjustments, EU carbon border adjustment mechanism, G7 Climate Club);
  • Experience synthesizing and communicating U.S. domestic policy developments to general audiences;
  • Prior experience with climate policy engagement, including working with coalitions, trade associations, or similar collaborative efforts involving diverse stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize among and efficiently manage multiple assignments and meet critical deadlines;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently, as needed.
Starting Salary Base: $76,000 - $95,000. Depending on experience and qualifications.
Status: Full-time, benefits eligible
Reporting to: Director for U.S. Policy and Outreach
Travel and Location: C2ES operates a hybrid work environment from our main office in Arlington, Virginia (with a move to downtown Washington, D.C. expected by November 2024). Preference will be given to applicants in (or willing to move to) the Washington, DC metro area, with physical presence expected in the office at least 3 days per week. We will, however, also consider remote applicants for this position.
