Description

Starting salary to commence at $51,361 - $55,019 based upon experience and certifications held.

General Statement of Job

Performs electrical repairs and installations associated with utility operations.

City Expectations:
In addition, certain essential city services are required to be maintained in any civil emergency. Depending upon the type of emergency, any and all employees may be activated as essential employees in the event of an emergency.

Duties & Responsibilities

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Technician (Grade 128)

1. Performs preventative and corrective maintenance of utility measuring and control instrumentation used at assigned facility and related sites. Inspects, troubleshoots and repairs equipment to ensure conformance to specifications and safety.
2. Calibrates and adjusts equipment using established standards and portable electronic meters.
3. Installs new control systems equipment in compliance with electrical codes, schematics and diagrams.
4. Operates special tools and equipment to perform diagnostics, maintenance, repairs and installation of instrumentation.
5. Collaborates with Florida Power and Light to ensure that an adequate power supply is maintained to applicable utility facilities.
6. Accurately and legibly completes and maintains work orders, records, reports, forms, and other required documentation.

7. Responsible for staying current with advances in industry technology.

8. Safely and efficiently drives and operates city vehicles/equipment as required.

Specialist (Grade 130)
9. In addition to performing all functions performed by the Instrument and Control Technician, the Instrument and Control Specialist:
a. Oversees and maintains telemetry operations and electronic apparatuses.
b. Monitors and repairs programmable logic controllers and other programmable devices as required.
c. Identifies and procures components/parts needed to repair instrumentation to support efficient operations.
d. Coordinates the activities of contractors as required to ensure completion of position responsibilities.
e. Analyzes existing practices and recommends equipment upgrades and enhancements.


Responsibilities
:

Responsible for maintaining instrumentation and control systems in a safe, reliable, efficient, and environmentally sound manner. Maintains all tools and equipment in safe and working conditions at all times. Responsible in work to the Maintenance Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education and Training

Technician (Grade 128)

1. High school graduate or equivalent.
2. Five (5) years electrical experience preferably in utility operations.
3. Possess a Permit-Required Confined Space Certificate or obtain within six months.

Specialist (Grade 130)
1. High school graduate or equivalent.
2. Five (5) years electrical experience preferably in utility operations.
3. Forty (40) hours specialized training in variable frequency drives, flow meters, equipment calibrations, motors/pumps, or industrial automation.
4. Possess a Permit-Required Confined Space Certificate or obtain within six months.
5. Possess or maintain one of the following:
  • Drinking Water Treatment or Wastewater Treatment Operator License Level C; or
  • Wastewater Collection Class C License; or
  • Five years experience as an Instrument/Control Technician in the field of utilities (Water Treatment Plant and/or Water Reclamation Facility operations)

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required
Skill Requirements:
Ability to repair, analyze and problem solve to complete work assignments. Knowledge of OSHA and National Electrical Code requirements. Ability to work independently of direct supervision and capable of sustaining regular and predictable attendance. Capable of performing electrical work on systems up to 480 volts. Ability to use electrical and electronic diagnostic equipment and maintain variable frequency drive (VFD) equipment, logic control equipment and telemetry controls. Must be able to communicate effectively; understand and follow oral and written instructions; complete all forms and reports legibly and accurately; and read/interpret electrical schematics. Awareness of occupational hazards, safety precautions and potential environmental impact. Capable of safely operating motorized/hand tools or equipment used to complete tasks. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, contractors, FP&L representatives and the general public. Possess a valid Florida Driver’s license, free of any serious violations.
Requires a working knowledge of the current version of the Microsoft Office Professional software suite including proficiency with Word and Excel. Must have a basic understanding of the current version of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Familiarity with CentralSquare Software applications based on an iSeries system is preferred. Working knowledge of current versions of Internet browsers and Microsoft Outlook is also highly recommended. Ability to learn specific computer applications used in the Department.


Physical Requirements
:

Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop, reach, and lift up to 40 pounds. Ability to work outside in all kinds of weather and for prolonged periods of time. Must have good eyesight and hearing with or without aids. Color vision required. Must possess excellent hand and eye coordination. Reasonable accommodation will be considered for individuals with physical disabilities.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:

Work is primarily performed outdoors in all kinds of weather in locations that may be potentially hazardous. Required to participate in the on call rotation and must be available for emergencies, which can extend the normal work period if required. May be provided a city issued cellular phone for emergency response.
