Engage in Adult programming with regular programs for the public, and outreach activities.Department Hiring Salary Range: $19.28 HourlyEssential FunctionsEssential functions include but are not limited to:Provides customer service by assisting patrons with basic reference questions, providing assistance with computers and equipment, and recommending reading materials.Responsible for developing and implementing adult programming on a regular basis.Assists with the maintenance of the branch’s adult library space and collection.Connects with community organizations, schools and Adult Living homes for outreach and partnership opportunities.Involves in supervision responsibilities in absence of a supervisor:Oversees and guides adult services staff and volunteers when the need arises.Provides customer service at the public service desk by assisting patrons with reference questions involving resources in print, the internet, databases, community information resources and reader's advisory.Receives deposits and posts money for daily cash report.Performs circulation activities by checking materials in and out, reserving material requests, registering new patrons, coordinating Interlibrary loans and collecting fees.Must be able to sit/stand for extended periods of time, lifts up to 25 pounds from ground to waist-level, bend, stoop, push, pull, and complete tasks requiring manual dexterity to retrieve books and other materials from shelves/cabinets ranging in height from floor level to approximately 6 feet, and unpack incoming books/orders.Thorough knowledge of library resources, procedures, and systems.Ability to use good judgement in daily services to analyze problems, recommend solutions and make decisions.High degree of comfort learning new technologies.Ability to relate library services to the needs of the community.Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employeesEducation/ExperienceWork requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.One year of experience in library or related services.Additional Information & RequirementsWork Hours: 20 hours per weekRegular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.RetirementIf you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply.
