Chatham County Schools is Hiring a School Counselor (Part-Time) Near Pittsboro, NC

NATURE OF WORK

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Federal Programs and the Executive Director of Student Services, employee will provide support for school based social workers through peer observations, mentoring and leading PLC meetings. Employee will also serve as the McKinney-Vento Liaison and be responsible for identifying and ensuring the immediate enrollment of all eligible McKinney-Vento. In addition, under general supervision, employee must act as a liaison between school-based staff and McKinney Vento families and the Department of DSS. Employee must build and maintain community partnerships in order to help families obtain resources and educational supports. This position will serve as a coordinator for resources and educational supports for students who are identified under the McKinney Vento Act and students in Foster Care. Employee will maintain files, records, and state and federally-mandated reports related to McKinney Vento students.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor's degree in social work is required, with a Master's degree preferred. Must either have or be eligible for a North Carolina Department of Public Instruction License for School Social Worker. It is highly recommended for the applicant to demonstrate the ability to speak, understand, read and write fluently in both English and Spanish; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

* Work with school-based staff and social workers to identify and immediately enroll McKinney Vento students.

* Advocate to ensure that McKinney Vento students receive the full and equal opportunity to succeed in school.

* Maintain an accurate tracking system for McKinney Vento students.

* Collaborate with community agencies and school system staff to coordinate needed services for families.

* Work with school liaisons to monitor McKinney Vento student academic progress throughout the school year and submit requests for interventions as necessary.

* Provides necessary professional development for stakeholders

* Assures that McKinney Vento families know their educational rights and that educational rights of families are posted throughout the district.

* Helps students and families make the best use of available opportunities and resources and to fully develop each student's individual potential

* Provides the necessary professional skills to assist students and communities in problem solving and conflict resolution in a safe and healthy manner

* Assists parents in utilizing school and community resources to help children maximize their educational abilities

* Provides individual and group counseling, case management, home visits and assessments

* Serves as liaison between school, family and community

* Adheres to the National Association of Social Workers code of ethical behavior and professional practice

* Models professional behaviors that contribute to addressing the needs of students, families and the school community

* Keeps abreast of current community resources and determines how these resources may be beneficial to the student, his/her family, and the family's involvement in the academic process

* Understands, and abides by, federal, state and local laws, such as child protection/child abuse, special education, attendance, education rights and privacy

* Consults with school personnel to encourage compliance with laws, statutes and policies

* Provides support for case management for families and students to help them navigate and obtain community resources, educational needs, and basic needs

* Works to identify mental health needs of students and helps families access school-based or outpatient therapy as needed.

* Collaborate with the Department of Social Services to help ensure that the educational needs of students in foster care are being met.

MINIMUM STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM RESPONSIBILITIES

Physical Requirements: Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Due to amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak in Spanish and English to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments, and/or directions.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, etc., in English and Spanish. Requires the ability to prepare routine and technical documents. Requires ability to write, using standard conventions, in English and Spanish.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions in English and Spanish. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English and Spanish.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; and to apply the principles of algebra, trigonometry and geometry.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using adaptive equipment.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to form numerous signs, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress. Must be sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups of persons.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Full-time for twelve months

Salary: Based on state and local salary schedules
