Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Jail Administrator, this position supports the mission of the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office by providing quality services that promote and protect the safety, security, and well-being of all the people in our community. The Sergeant - Corrections is responsible for the professional administration and enforcement of all federal, state, and local laws as well as the provision of other law enforcement services to the public. The Sergeant - Corrections will be assigned one of several sergeant positions within the Jail Division of the Sheriff's Office. Assignments may include Operations, Programs or Administration. This position will support staff and maintain control over the daily operation and activities of inmates; assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures; manage the inmate discipline system; and respond to emergency situations. This position will coordinate, provide leadership, and work direction to Correctional Officers. This position requires independence and must achieve accuracy, meet sensitive deadlines, think critically, make sound decisions, lead others, and communicate effectively with diverse populations.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Assures the proper performance of the unit's mission and adherence to established rules, regulations, policies, and procedures by staff. Coordinates and monitors tasks and functions and leads the work activities of Correctional Officers. Act as a technical resource and lead for jail and/or program operations. Assigns job duties to crews. Demonstrates and provides leadership regarding knowledge of rules, policies, and procedures. Assist in managing time off and overtime activities of Correctional Officers. Reviews time sheets to verify with hours worked. Conducts briefings to on-coming crews.Assists with staff development through training, mentoring, constructive feedback, and coaching. Acts as communication liaison between Jail Administration and Correctional Officers while modeling professionalism, teamwork, accountability, decision-making ability, and reliability.Directs supervision of inmates, including timely performance of unit duties, and helps facilitate the movement of boarded inmates in other facilities. Enforces and oversees operational and facility compliance with United States Constitution, Minnesota Statutes, Minnesota Department of Corrections standards and rules, court orders, Sheriff's Office, and jail policies and procedures. Makes recommendations for policy or procedure changes to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of operations. Utilizes jail computer systems and programs to maintain written and computerized records and to prepare reports. Makes recommendations for improvement of jail functions, services, and processes. Inspects facility sanitation, safety, and evacuation procedures. Consults with jail administration and County Attorney on interpretation of laws and ordinances. Supervises jail activities and monitors behavior of inmates. Maintains the safety and well-being of inmates through evaluating them when they enter the facility, continuous monitoring, security checks, well-being checks, and interaction with them. Reviews, approves, and maintains reports, classifications, daily logs, inmate logs, and files. Implements the facility classification plan, provides medical and related transports, approves or denies privileges based on set protocols. Monitors after-hour programs and activities. Authorizes inmate transfers. Implements releases per the conditions and timelines of the court and collects bail money. Assigns inmate work details and releases. Triages medical situations including afterhours medical attention, evaluates medical problems, ensures access to medication, ensures officers follow proper protocols for administering medical services.Prepares for and responds to emergency situations. Assists in de-escalation of potentially hostile situations. Plans and executes emergency drills at the direction of jail administration. Responds to and directs resources during emergent and non-emergent incidents including, but not limited to, inmate fights, suicide attempts, threats to staff, fire alarms, escape attempts, contraband recovery, and medical situations to restore order and security to the facility.Conducts and/or reviews inmate disciplinary hearings to decide inmate's guilt or innocence. Receives and responds to inmate grievances as directed by Assistant Jail Administrator.Directs and ensures staff conduct searches of inmates, living areas, cells, and visitors for contraband in accordance with jail policy and procedures. Sergeants – Corrections may be receive specific assignments and be responsible for, but not limited to, any/all of the following functions: Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Coordinator and Coordinator of Accessible Communications; identify and/or coordinate training development and tracking; train on the jail management system and other systems as assigned; maintain accountability and documentation of required retention paperwork to include radio logs, Taser logs, formal counts, and other logs as directed; evaluate programs to ensure they contribute to the jail programs mission and are evidence-based; identify tracking mechanisms to communicate success of the programs department; collaborate with other county departments as well as non-county entities to facilitate inmate services; and seek out and apply for grants as needed and prepare reports for jail administration for review.Promotes a diverse, culturally competent, and respectful workplace.Interacts positively with internal and external customers. Communicates and interacts effectively and respectfully with employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and customers. Interacts with other law enforcement agencies. Performs the physical and mental demands of the position. Attends work during regularly scheduled hours. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS: Participates in recruitment and hiring process.Trains and mentors new staff as requested.Provides credible testimony in court. Attends and testifies in criminal and civil court proceedings. Represents the interests of the county, state, and federal government. Makes a verbal account for observations, actions, and findings while performing official duties.Participates in professional staff development. Participates in training and education opportunities to maintain and improve proficiency. Attends and participates in professional organizations. Associates with employees and departments from other counties and states for collaborationPerforms other related functions as required or assigned.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Involves a bid shift in a 24/7 operation which, under normal conditions, results in a 40-hour work week. Schedule is a straight shift bid of 12-hour shifts, days 0500-1700 or nights 1700-0500 with one assigned 8-hour shift and includes working weekends and holidays. Scheduled shifts may rotate if deemed necessary. Overtime hours are required from time to time based on personnel shortage, mandatory trainings, meetings or unforeseen circumstances.
