Equal Opportunity Employer

**Transcript**[uplifting music] At BJC HealthCare, we are so proud of our administrative fellowship program. Our fellows have an opportunity to work side by side leaders across BJC to advance projects that improve the health and wellbeing of the communities that we serve. Our fellows go on to have very successful careers. Oftentimes, it's here with us at BJC HealthCare. I was a product of an administrative fellowship program many years ago. It's a great way to learn the workings across a healthcare organization, as complicated and as complex as BJC. We are so proud of our administrative fellowship program. Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a teaching hospital, and that does not just refer to clinicians, it also refers to leaders, and our hospital fellows are really an important part of their team. They allow us to advance our teaching mission by making sure the next generation of leaders is prepared to lead this dynamic healthcare environment, but more importantly for us, they're an important part of our team. They give us much more than we give them. They bring the contemporary leadership skills to our environment. They teach us consistently, they are part of our team and they play a very important and special role. I think about COVID and how the fellows jumped in and helped our team with resiliency. And every class has made an important contribution and leaves a rich legacy that lives on long beyond their fellowship. As the President of Barnes-Jewish Hospital, and a member of the leadership team here at Barnes-Jewish for over 11 years, I have really come to appreciate the value of our fellowship program. Our fellows have nearly unlimited access to the activities, the meetings, the conversations with our executive leadership team, but more importantly, they also make large contributions to the very important missions and the projects that we have at BJH. The fellows here are a integral part of our leadership team. They contribute in so many ways, and I'd like to invite you to take a long look at the relationship we have with our fellows and the opportunities to come and train at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Each fellowship has absolutely shaped my career, both at Barnes-Jewish and then in subsequent roles with BJC, really due to the connections as well as the exposure of the activities and the relationships that you've gotten to build over time. Really, in the role, you are able to learn from the executives, you're able to partner with them, learn soft skills around presentations, how to present yourself, how to speak up in meetings, as well as some of the more technical aspects of hospital administration, working with departments, people in budget management. I chose the David A. Gee Administrative Fellowship at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis for a few reasons. The first is that I really wanted a program that was two years, because I felt that having one year full of rotations, so getting to see all different departments, was really valuable, but in addition to that, being able to stay on for another year and really become ingrained in a department would also be an invaluable experience. Before joining the administrative fellowship, I spent about 10 years in clinical practice as an audiologist. And since then, a lot of clinicians have approached me and asked about, you know, the transition that I made. Particularly, a nurse at Barnes-Jewish Hospital asked me if I was able to make a bigger impact as an administrative fellow than as a clinician, and I told her the answer, at least for me, was a resounding yes. And the reason for that was, you know, before, my job was to make sure that one patient had an incredible interaction. Now, my job is to make sure that we're removing barriers for both patients and team members to create the environment for an incredible patient experience and amazing clinical outcomes every single time. I can say that the fellowship has definitely given me the real world experience, quote, unquote, that I would never have been able to get directly after grad school otherwise. So just understanding how businesses and large organizations work, understanding how much culture plays a role into your fulfillment satisfaction in life. So I would definitely say that it is a foundation for everything that I want to do in my career.
