Position Overview:

  • Job Title: First Grade Language Arts and Social Studies Teacher
  • Location: Westminster School, Annandale, VA

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement a comprehensive language arts and social studies curriculum aligned with state standards and school objectives for first-grade students.
  • Develop engaging lesson plans and activities that foster phonics-based reading, writing, comprehension skills, and a foundation for social studies concepts.
  • Teach daily language arts classes, providing instruction, guidance, and encouragement to students of varying skill levels and abilities. Social studies is taught 2-3 times a week.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment where students feel empowered to explore language arts and social studies and develop a passion for learning.
  • Collaborate with fellow teachers and faculty members to coordinate curriculum integration, interdisciplinary projects, and school-wide events.
  • Assess student progress through regular evaluations, providing constructive feedback to support individual growth.
  • Utilize Orton-Gillingham instructional methods (preferred) to support students with diverse learning needs and promote literacy development.
  • Promote critical thinking, creativity, and inquiry-based learning through interactive lessons and discussions.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, participation, and performance, communicating with parents and guardians as needed to address concerns or celebrate achievements.
  • Stay current with trends, developments, and best practices in language arts and social studies education, integrating innovative techniques and technology to enhance learning experiences.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and contribute to the school community through extracurricular activities, events, and committees.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, Language Arts, Social Studies, or related field.
  • Prior experience teaching language arts and/or social studies at the elementary level.
  • Orton-Gillingham training is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of child development, literacy instruction, and social studies concepts.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, students, and families.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a demonstrated ability to create an inclusive learning environment that celebrates individual differences.
