Inmarsat Government is Hiring a Sr. Spacecraft Systems Engineer Near Reston, VA

This position is for a full time, experienced satellite communications systems engineer with a primary focus on the ground segment. Inmarsat Government Solutions is seeking a highly motivated and innovative individual interested in joining a diverse team engaged in the development of cutting edge ground and satellite communications systems for the U.S. government. This role will require technical competence spanning satellite system ground hardware, satellite control networks, space processing software, antennas, and space operations in order to deliver global satellite systems and networks that can reliably support our customers.
Projects will run the full life-cycle of development, integration, test and operation. The individual who fills this position will lead others to evaluate customer/operational needs, to define system performance requirements, integrate technical components and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces.
You are the engineer that other engineers can count on as the subject matter expert for the programs supported. You are expected to bring technical solutions to challenges, while attacking problems with enthusiasm and removing hurdles. You are a self-starter, team player, and have the drive to venture into unknown areas to make the system work.
Key Responsibilities:
Responsible for design, development, integration, test, operations and maintenance of both new and existing ground systems
Analyze complex satellite communications requirements, space and ground equipment specifications, and performance requirements to identify and document compliant end to end solutions
Work with hardware, software and customer organizations across the satellite industry, translating customer and system requirements into actual technical solutions
Define, schedule, and assign tasks, and monitor completion to validate system-of-systems concepts, system concepts and subsystem concepts by inspection, analysis, test, and demonstration to assure that the system architecture and design concepts satisfy the intent of the customer requirements
Coordinate with management and peers to ensure the integrity of high quality operational products, including procedures, tools, detailed event logging, and system configuration
Lead highly complex programs, apply innovation, learn new technologies, and represent the organization as a technical Subject Matter Expert
Participate in a weekly rotation of on-call (24/7) subject matter expert support to maintain satellite and ground system operations and provide customer facing anomaly resolution
Basic QualificationsTypical Education & Experience: Degree and typical experience in engineering classification: Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Aerospace or Systems Engineering and 15 or more years' experience, Master's with 12 or more years' experience or PhD with 11 or more years' experience.
Basic Qualifications (Required):
Solid background in one or more disciplines related to satellite communications systems design, integration and operation, such as RF, antenna, baseband handling, digital processing, control and monitor processing, and network communication
Ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one or more engineering areas; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and leading a project team
Excellent interpersonal, written & verbal skills with the ability to work with a global team to bring all the components of the system together
Technical leadership experience in space communications systems that spans space, ground and software systems engineering (requirements, design, and operation)
Works well in a team environment with strong communication skills
Must be able to obtain a security clearance
Desired Qualifications:
TS/SCI security clearance
Experience with integrated systems for space mission management and command & control
Experience with Government programs & processes
Competence in IP networking concepts
Demonstrated ability in troubleshooting complex communications systems
Creative approach to problem solving and exceptional analytical skills
Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment that includes working with changing needs and requirements
