The City of West Sacramento is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Police Lieutenant. Ideal candidates will have a strong commitment to community policing, demonstrate leadership skills, and have experience in managing and coordinating the work of sworn and civilian personnel in a law enforcement agency. Candidates with a strong track record in fostering positive relationships with the community, local organizations, and fellow team members are highly preferred. 
Here in West Sacramento, we understand the value of our employees and offer a competitive annual base salary ranging from $143,000 to $174,000 depending on experience. But that's not all. Monthly Amount Displayed Includes The Following:

1. Base pay: $14,496 top step
2. Education Incentive: 10% (5% for a Bachelor's Degree and 5% for a Masters Degree for a total of 10%)
3. POST Certificates: 5% (5% for POST Management Certificate plus completion a professional development course that is pre-approved by the Police Chief)
4. 401a city contribution, no match required - 3%
5. Career Enhancement/Wellness Reimbursement - $1000 Annually
6. Eligible for an additional 5% bilingual incentive (not included in total displayed amount

Incomplete information on the application and/or resume, supplemental questionnaire, may be cause for disqualification from the examination process. Application packages will be screened for qualifications. Top screened qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an Assessment Center, tentatively scheduled for July 10, 2024. The results of the Assessment Center will determine the applicant's placement on the eligibility list. The top candidates successfully passing each phase of the examination process will be forwarded to the Department for further departmental consideration the week of July 15, 2024. 
DEFINITION: The Police Lieutenant performs responsible, high-level administrative and technical work for the Police Department.
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: The Police Lieutenant receives general direction from the Police Chief or designee and exercises direct supervision over sworn and civilian personnel.
 
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: This is a management level position. The incumbent reports to the Police Chief or his/her designee and has responsibility for providing direct supervision over sworn and civilian personnel.

A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:
 

Education: High school diploma or equivalent plus sixty (60) college semester units from an accredited college or university with major course work in police science, business administration, or public administration. A Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

Experience: Six (6) years experience as a peace officer in a municipal or general law enforcement agency. For internal applicants of the City of West Sacramento, two (2) years of the experience requirement must include increasingly responsible experience in a supervisory capacity in a law enforcement agency granting peace officer powers under Penal Code Section 830.1. For external applicants, four (4) years of the experience requirement must include increasingly responsible experience in a supervisory capacity in a law enforcement agency granting peace officer powers under Penal Code Section 830.1.
