Technical/Tribology Manager – Metalworking (MWF), Lubricant and Fuel Additives

JOB SUMMARY:

The primary responsibility of the Technical/Tribology Manager – Metalworking Fluids, Lubricant & Fuel Additives is to plan and execute the projects and activities to develop new and improve upon our current product offerings. Knowledge of existing technology, its application, its value in the industry and to leverage this into products which are relevant and useful to the industry is paramount. A core appreciation of the fundamentals of the petrochemical industry from crude oil through to finished fuels and lubricants is ultimately needed.

Ultimately the primary focus is in MWF, lube & fuel additives but these same chemistries relate to and are utilized in prior markets which are also important to Dover. Laboratory work including wet & tribology testing as well as synthesis and plant scale up are all ultimately a team effort and require an openness to cross over to Refinery and Oilfield Chemical applications.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience

  • B.S. Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. M.S. is preferred
  • 3 years experience managing research projects including their development, and experiments.
  • Experience in laboratory research or experiments, in synthetic organic chemical laboratory techniques, standardized qualitative laboratory analyses and quantitative laboratory analyses,
  • Experience in chemical plant operations with both batch and continuous operations highly desirable.
  • Process Capability trained; Deming, Crosby or Juran. Six Sigma training desirable (Green Belt, Black Belt)
  • Familiarity with the Stage Gate method of project oversight.
  • Ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to conduct process scale up studies including full scale plant trials for new processes and/or new products.

Technical Knowledge

  • Experience in developing, planning and executing new product development projects from concept through production.
  • Demonstrated experience to analyze and evaluate technical data and communicate results both orally and in writing.
  • Competent in the selection, use and interpretation of tribological testing.
  • Knowledge of Federal / State EPA and OSHA compliance standards.
  • Knowledge of lab safety practices.
  • Able to interpret and utilize Process Capability effectively.
  • IP mapping involving both prior art and patent preparation relevant to product areas.
  • Write and present technical papers at technical conferences.
  • Provide customers with technical support and training when needed.

NATURE & SCOPE:

The Technical Manager-Lube Additives routinely manages multiple experiments and projects per year supporting the development of the various Lube Additive Markets. This position requires the incumbent to work autonomously within the scope of the position and is responsible for the conduct of the Tribology Laboratory.

Skill sets required to be successful in the position include, but are not limited to interpersonal and relationship building skills, building strong and effective working relationships, business partnerships and a drive to be connected to the technical fraternal side of the lubricant industry and able to connect Sales to Performance.

The position reports to the Technical Manager, Petroleum Additives, makes recommendations on research problems and methods, and on occasion will represent the organization to resolve technical issues related to the lube additive business. He/she will direct supervision and guidance but only in terms of specific work objectives and critical issues.

The position serves as a resource for Sales, Operations, Quality Control, customers, vendors, tollers and outside testing laboratories that run comparison experiments on customer samples, requests, or complaints.

The position requires an individual with strong technical, analytical, organizational, and leadership skills; problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills, independent judgement skills, inter-personal and people management skills.

Frequent contacts within the organization include: Business Unit Leader, Hammond Works, Business Manager (s) for Oilfield, MWF, Lubes, etc. & Director of Research and Development.

External contacts may include: MWF & Lube additive customers, Lube & Tribology Fraternal Organizations and Suppliers

  • Ability to effectively interface and communicate with operations, engineering, purchasing, EH&S, Sales, Customer Service, R&D, Quality Control, vendors, tollers, outside testing laboratories, and customers.
  • Requires strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Requires strong technical, analytical, and planning skills.
  • Must have strong organizational, project, and time management skills.
  • Must be able to identify, prioritize and lead multiple projects and perform work with a constant awareness of improving processes.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities within established timeline.
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and public speaking skills, attention to detail, with proven ability to build partnerships across and between functional groups.
  • Computer skills are a must with knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and MS PowerPoint.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Must be able to work around hazardous chemicals and exposure to dust.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours depending on new product development and scale up of laboratory experiments that may include weekends, off shifts, and holidays, depending on Business requirements.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment.
  • Must be able to respond to visual and audible alarms and paging.
  • Occasionally will be exposed to outside weather elements (i.e. rain, snow, cold, heat).
  • Must be reachable by telephone when not present on-site in the case of customer demands, operational issues, or regional sales representative questions.
  • Ability to move freely around laboratory and production areas.
  • Ability to ascend/descend stairs, move about the plant and office, bending, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, stooping and remaining in a stationary position up to 20% of the time when running reactions.
  • Must be able to frequently move objects weighing up to 10 lbs. routinely and up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • Periodic domestic travel required, may include weekends.
