SPECIALTY SURGERY ASSISTANT
Reports to: Specialty Surgery Lead, Specialty Surgery Doctors, Taylor Radano (Supervisor)
Overall Responsibility: To assist the veterinary technician or doctor with specialty surgery services.
*Preferred 6-12 months of Veterinary Assistant or Animal Hospital experience*
Responsibilities:
- Assist veterinary surgeons in performing complex surgical procedures on animals
- Prepare surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies prior to surgery
- Monitor animals before, during and after surgery to ensure their safety and well-being
- Administer medications and anesthesia as directed by veterinary surgeons
- Maintain a clean and sterile surgical environment
- Clean, sterilize and maintain surgical instruments, equipment and supplies
- Keep accurate records of animal medical histories and surgical procedures
- Assist with post-operative care, including wound care, medication administration, and follow-up appointments
Qualifications and Educational Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Certification as a veterinary assistant or technician preferred
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working in an animal hospital
- Familiarity with surgical instruments, equipment and procedures
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment
- Ability to handle animals of various sizes and temperaments
- Ability to lift and move heavy objects (50 lbs or more)
- Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings
