The Dalton School is Hiring a Part-Time High School English Teacher (1-Year Position) Near New York, NY

 

Salary Range: $38,000 - $84,000. The position on the scale will be based on years of teaching experience and education.

The Dalton School, a progressive K-12 gender-inclusive school in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, is consistently recognized as one of the preeminent independent day schools in the nation. Known for its child-centered approach and an exceptional, inspiring faculty, Dalton enrolls over 1,300 students with approximately 350 faculty and staff. Guided by the Dalton Plan, the foundation of a Dalton education, our faculty meets each student’s evolving needs, interests, and abilities, and fosters diversity as an integral part of school life. Dalton challenges each student to develop intellectual independence, creativity, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility toward others both within the School and in the broader community.

We are seeking a part-time high school English teacher for the 2024-2025 school year, to join an exceptionally collegial and engaged department with a strong commitment to collaboration. This is a one-year appointment. English at Dalton is taught in discussion-based seminars, with an emphasis on cultivating a thoughtful, intellectually curious approach to literature. We seek a candidate with expertise in and enthusiasm for a wide range of genres and time periods, and experience teaching close reading and analytical writing skills. Our ideal candidate is passionate and knowledgeable about high school students, literature, and writing; enjoys working with students across a wide range of abilities; and has a breadth of interests. Candidates with a background in diversity, equity and inclusion work are of particular interest.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach two to four English courses (we have openings in three 9th grade Literature & Composition sections and one 10th grade Poetry & Drama section). 
  • Design engaging lessons, in collaboration with the department grade-level teams.
  • Work one-on-one with students daily for support and enrichment.
  • Engage actively in departmental and school-wide diversity, equity and inclusion work.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree preferred.
  • Minimum of one-year relevant teaching experience; high school teaching experience preferred.
  • Ability to work productively and collaboratively with a diverse faculty and student body.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
