Department: Utility Maintenance

Salary Range: $47,840 - $72,800

Nature of Work: Under the direction of the Utility Maintenance Supervisor this position functions in a support role in completing daily, weekly, monthly and annual inspections of domestic and non-domestic commercial sewer users for compliance with BSU’s sewer use policy, State and Federal sewer use and pretreatment guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities: The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of tasks performed in this classification. Incumbents may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

• Performs and/or assists in performing inspections of domestic and non-domestic wastewater users to determine if they are subject to a pretreatment program. Inspects grease interceptors, oil & water separators, and other pretreatment devices, completes associated reports, and maintains records of inspection results.
• Works with Utilities Maintenance and Distribution/Collections departments in identifying Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) issues in the collection system and determining possible contributors to the problematic areas.
• Works with the Engineering department in reviewing and tracking businesses that require approval for service related to interceptors or separators.
• Acts as liaison between BSU and domestic and non-domestic wastewater sewer users. Interacts directly with business owners, office managers etc. to explain BSU’s need to perform the various required inspections.
• Inspects, monitors and samples pre-treatment devices to determine compliance with sewer use policy.
• Investigates sewer events related to unauthorized discharge from customers into BSU's collection system.
• Required to operate a motor vehicle in performance of assigned tasks.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Basic wastewater treatment methods and procedures, and sanitary/safety characteristics of wastewater and chemicals used in the treatment process.
• Plant safety precautions, and occupational hazards associated with wastewater treatment operations.
• Effective operational techniques and requirements. Maintenance, testing and sampling principles and requirements.
• Gathering and maintenance of accurate records.
• Use of modern office equipment, computers, electronic devices, and various computer programs and applications, to include Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Organization, prioritization, and time management.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with supervisor support staff, other departments and the public.
• Adapt to performing under frequent deadlines and/or in response to emergencies.

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma/GED.
• One (1) year of experience in wastewater treatment, water treatment, treatment laboratory or related work.

Licenses and/or Certifications:

• Florida driver license 

Preferred Qualifications

• Wastewater Operator C license or Wastewater Collection Systems Operator Level C certification.
