Audubon Institute is Hiring an Educator On Call Near Orleans, LA

 

Position Title: On-Call Educator

Department: Learning and Engagement

Reports To: Camps and Family Programs Supervisor

General Summary: 

On-Call Educators deliver engaging informal and interpretive programming to campers, families, 

and general visitors. Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to program 

delivery, supervising children, assisting program coordinators/managers in the supervision of 

volunteers, and assessing/coordinating supplies and physical space needed for programs.

Opportunities for On-Call Educators include but are not limited to holiday camps, after hour events, 

and other family programs, with most shift opportunities during holiday weeks and/or select Friday 

and Saturday evenings. Educators must be 18 years or older. Educators are expected to consistently 

model the Learning and Engagement departmental core values: clear is kind, dare to grow, and 

engage with curiosity.

To deliver on the Audubon mission, the On-Call Educator will: 

Provide a guest experience of outstanding quality by…

• Delivering engaging, hands-on informal and interpretive programs for guests of all ages, focusing on ages 4-13

• Preparing and setting up for all programming

• Understanding the significance of their role and how they can make a positive impact on our guests

• Providing proactive, friendly communication and striving to anticipate guests needs and desires

• Communicating issues or concerns to the Camps and Family Programs Supervisor in a timely manner

• Working in a cooperative manner with the animal care team and respecting the Ambassador Animal collection 

spaces, protocols, and equipment

• Collaborating with the Learning and Engagement staff members

Educate our diverse audience about the natural world by…

• Delivering informal programming and events throughout the year

Provide opportunities for recreation in natural settings by…

• Plan and lead games and activities with youth with an emphasis on conservation messaging

• Lead groups throughout the facility providing adequate information on the animals and nature they encounter 

The above listed duties are general statements of required major duties and responsibilities performed on a regular and

Welcome

• Make eye contact with every customer encounter, smile at every person, offer friendly phrases and greetings.

• Wear identification badge.

• Walk individuals to their destination instead of pointing; aid people who look confused.

• Assume ownership of potential safety hazards (wipe-up spills, pick up trash). Always have the camera-ready look.

• Maintain a positive attitude, pleasant tone of voice (remember it is not what you say, but how you say it).

• Coach coworkers on service expectations.

• Utilize the power of teamwork to give excellent service.

• Know when to involve management.

Inspire

• Know the answers to questions or seek out the answers.

• Utilize proper phone etiquette (answer phone within three rings, smile before answering call, ask for permission and 

wait for response before placing caller on hold).

• Ensure work area is free of food, drink, socialization, and personal business.

• Follow Dress Code Policy on clothing and grooming.

• Keep unpleasant concerns behind closed doors (vent backstage).

Supervision: This position will include the supervision of children and may assist in the supervision of volunteers and 

interns as needed.

Experience:

• Demonstrated experience working with or around children is required.

• Demonstrated experience working in a formal or informal learning environment is strongly preferred.

• Demonstrated experience delivering nature- or conservation-based educational content is strongly preferred.
