POSITION PURPOSE

The Benefits Specialist position is responsible for assisting with the development, coordination, communication, and administration of the employee benefits program. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant laws, while effectively managing various human resources functions.

*The salary range is $50,000-$60,000 annually, commensurate with education and experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To succeed in this role, an individual must be able to perform satisfactorily the functions listed below. The company will make reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions. 

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Assist in managing the administration of employee benefits programs, including enrollment, termination, eligibility verification, life events, and claims resolution.
  • Resolve benefit inquiries through the ticketing system and phone calls.
  • Ensure accurate recordkeeping and timely communication with employees. 
  • Maintain accurate records of employee elections, coverage levels, and beneficiary designations.
  • Conduct employee benefit orientation on a routine basis in the absence of the Benefits Director.
  • Assist in coordinating, monitoring, and maintaining records for leaves of absence, the Family Medical Leave Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, and other state and federal laws and regulations. 
  • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of legal requirements related to the day-to-day management of employee benefits, reducing legal risks, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures. 
  • Coordinate with external vendors, such as insurance providers and brokers, to ensure seamless administration of benefits.
  • Provide HR policy guidance and interpretation as appropriate.
  • Assist with special projects. 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in planning, coordination, and direction of employee activities to boost morale and teammate engagement.
  • Provide back-up for HR Support Specialist as needed. 

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Perform duties in the absence of the Benefits Director. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • No direct reports.
  • Develop and implement benefits policies and procedures. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and experience. 

  • Associate degree with a minimum of two years of related experience required. Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field preferred. Any combination of education and experience that would provide an equivalent background may be considered. 
  • One to two years experience with ADP or other Human Resources Information Systems preferred but not required. 
  • PHR/SHRM-CP or SPHR/SHRM-SCP certification desired. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The requirements below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 

  • Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. 
  • Proficiency in using a computer and related technology, including proficiency with Microsoft Office, the internet, and spreadsheets and databases. 
  • Ability to operate office equipment, including copiers, fax machines, and phones. 
  • Basic mathematical abilities (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). 
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and manage tasks and time effectively. 
  • Ability to accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files. 
  • Ability to interact with individuals and groups in person and through phone, e-mail, and written correspondence. 
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here represent those an individual must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. 

  • Ability to work in a deadline-oriented office environment. 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 
  • Ability to remain stationary 50% of the time and to move intermittently throughout the workday, occasionally between departments or facilities.
  • Local travel is required; evening and weekend travel is required occasionally. Overnight travel may be required with company-sponsored training.
