Job Definition:
Performs responsible, professional, and administrative work under the guidance of the Recreation Director in the management and operations of the Amesbury Youth Recreation department. Assists in the planning, implementing, and operation of projects and programs including but not limited to recruitment and supervision of personnel, program development, administration, coordination of all recreation activities, and programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
-Plan, organize and administer a comprehensive recreation program for all ages to include sports, arts and crafts, nature, music, drama, dance, games, social recreation, day camps, specialized classes, and activities.
-Maintains and troubleshoots all recreation websites, software and technology.
-Serves as a program supervisor or instructor as needed and may be required to work outside of normal business hours.
-Supervises the purchase, issuance and inventory of equipment and supplies for programs.
-Conducts registrations and enrollments, collects fees and makes deposits, and maintains spreadsheets and databases of information.
- Manage reservations for recreation and athletic facilities in a fair and equitable manner and in accordance with city ordinances.
-Seeks and implements new program ideas.
- Responsible for creating and designing the recreation online brochure.
-Prepares promotional material including news releases, public service announcements, program flyers and posters to recruit participants into activities.
-Prepares financial and evaluation reports for programs.
-Conducts interviews of part-time and seasonal staff and hires, trains and supervises them along with providing summer staff orientation.
-Supervises the operation of Lake Gardner Beach facility as well as the City’s Camp Kent Nature Center.
- Develops, coordinates, and maintains a marketing plan for the department including updating social media, department website, facebook and print media.
-Implements safe and proper procedures for discipline, accident reports and first aid for each program. Ensures that all areas, facilities, and equipment are safe and used properly.
-Coordinates use of schools and program flyer distribution with principals, secretaries and custodians as needed.
-Recruits volunteers for programs and coordinates recognition efforts.
-Works closely with other community agencies to coordinate partnership opportunities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
-Requires knowledge of recreation programming, athletic programs, marketing, and customer service.
-Good mathematical, organizational and communication skills. Proficiency in the use of computers such as excel spreadsheets, google, my rec software (can be learned) and Adobe creative cloud.
-Ability to formulate and administer recreation programs to meet community needs.
- Familiarity with the principles and practices of recreational management and/or athletic program protocol. Knowledge of the materials, methods, safety precautions and techniques relative to recreational maintenance operations.
-Able to work flexible hours, evenings, and weekends
-Time management skills
-Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
-Ability to handle multiple and varied tasks and to work and meet deadlines despite frequent interruptions.
-Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
-Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships and effectively represent the agency to community organizations and the public.
-Initiative, persistence, and ability to inspire the best efforts of others
-Public speaking ability
Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Baccalaureate Degree in Recreation and Parks or a related human service field. Experience may substitute for some of the college years. Minimum two years of responsible experience in supervising, administering, organizing, and leading municipal recreation programs. Must possess valid MA driver’s license or the ability to obtain the license within 30 days of employment and have access to a vehicle. Must have safe driving record.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, drive, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl and move up to 30 pounds. The work requires physical agility and mental acuity. Employee must be able to access all recreation fields and structures. Vision and hearing at /or correctable to normal ranges.
