Zoo Curator

Pay Range: $63,247.51 - $84,999.36

The City of Attleboro seeks a Zoo Curator, who under direction of the Zoo Director, the Zoo Curator is responsible for the overall care and management of the Capron Park Zoo’s live animal collections (both ambassador and exhibit), as well as supervise Animal Care staff.

Duties include, maintains registrar, permitting and animal records responsibilities. Performs Animal welfare assessment. Evaluates, approves and oversees all animal enrichment and operant conditioning programs. Acts as a liaison with population management programs and other AZA committees. Develops and enforces standards of animal care policies and procedures for the entire specimen collection. Develops and implements the institutional Collection Plan. Develops and monitors departmental budgets. Communicates with zoo director, veterinarian, maintenance and animal care staff regarding animal health, care and habitats. Collaborates with education in the production of interpretive graphics associated with animal exhibits. Leads by example and helps schedule, assign and direct animal care staff and volunteers, as-needed, which includes performance management and disciplinary action. Leads others in the research and development of new habitats and renovations. Represents the department at professional meetings, conferences or in the media as requested. Works with guest services and marketing with respect to exhibition, visitor experience and special functions. Participates with crisis management, safety drills and meetings with fellow department representatives when required. Other duties as assigned.

Must possess Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Zoology, Animal Husbandry, or related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution. 5 years progressive experience in zoological work in an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoo. 2 years of paid supervisory experience of animal care staff in a zoo, aquarium or nature center. Knowledge of laws and permits regulating acquisition, disposition, exhibition, husbandry standards and transportation within the US. Knowledge of AZA accreditation, USDA standards and related policies. Must be able to remain calm, make sound decisions and provide clear direction in crisis situations. Working knowledge of ZIMS. Must possess excellent communication skills. Must have the ability to work flexible hours, including weekdays, weekends, holidays and evenings. Knowledge of dangerous and venomous species handling and protocols a plus.
