Position Summary:
Dr. Tabor in the Department of Bioengineering is hiring a Research Technician role for the Summer of 2024. This role will primarily help with routine maintenance of the laboratory space. This will include but is not limited to washing dishes, autoclaving glassware, removing waste, preparing consumables, and general cleaning. These duties are vital to the function of the lab as a whole, and in doing them, the individual will be supporting ongoing research being done by graduate students and post-docs. Strong applicants will have good communication skills, be highly organized, and diligent workers.

Workplace Requirements:
Individuals who work in the laboratory space will be required to wear long pants, closed toed shoes, and tie back any hair longer than shoulder length. There are certain duties that will require this individual to don a laboratory coat and safety glasses that will be provided. This individual should be able to lift up to 50 pounds and be comfortable using large equipment such as an autoclave and dishwasher, training will be provided. This is a fully on campus job up to 20 hours per week with some reasonable flexibility. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.
Proposed Hiring Range : $15.72-$18.08 (up to 20 hours per week)
This position is funded by a grant, soft and/or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of funding.
Minimum Requirements :

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• 2 years of experience
  • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted

Skills:

• Ability to use word processing and spreadsheet software, Microsoft Office Suite
• Basic math and research skills
• Good organization skills and strong attention to detail
• Ability to listen and communicate effectively (verbal, written)
• Ability to work independently and in team environments
• Ability to conduct basic evaluation and analysis of data
• Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards

Essential Functions:

• Assists in conducting research and experiments
• Collects and tracks basic data using spreadsheets and database
• Assists in the laboratory setup and day-to-day technical operations including promoting safety, maintaining equipment, creating kits and preparing reagents
• Prepares procurement requests and orders materials and supplies, manages sample and stock database, sets up and manages experiments, and maintains research results for publications
• Performs all other duties as assigned
